MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama baseball team will play five games in the next six days, beginning Tuesday when it hosts Nicholls State in a 6 p.m. contest at Stanky Field.
South Alabama (15-16) fell to Nicholls State 11-2 earlier this season in Thibodaux, and has dropped two of its last three games against the Colonels dating back to last season. NSU has swept South Alabama three times (1980,’83,1993) since the series began in 1973. USA is 27-13 all-time against the Colonels.
The Jaguars enter the week 1-4 in their last five games and 4-6 in their last 10 contests, after dropping two of three games to Florida Atlantic over the weekend and falling to Southeastern Louisiana 13-8 last Wednesday in Hammond, La.
South Alabama is hitting .287 as a team, and is averaging nearly six runs and 10 hits per game. The Jags allow an average of nearly seven runs and 11 hits per game. USA ranks fifth in the Sun Belt Conference in hitting (.287), and ranks third in the league in home runs (20) and tied for third in doubles (68).
The Jaguar pitching staff leads the league in home runs allowed with 10 surrendered this season.
Nolan Earley leads the conference with 14 doubles, while Taylor White leads the league with 14 stolen bases. Jaguar catcher Brent Tanner ranks fourth in the SBC in home runs with six following his two-home run performance Sunday against Florida Atlantic.
Nicholls State (16-16) carries a four-game winning streak into Tuesday’s contest, and is 8-2 in its last 10 games. The Colonels swept Northwestern State in a three-game set over the weekend, and are 4-8 in road games this season. Nicholls State is hitting .245 as a team, and carries a 3.80 ERA into Tuesday’s game.
Chase Jaramillo leads NSU in batting average (.370), at-bats (127), runs scored (25), hits (47), total bases (64), slugging percentage (.504) and on-base percentage (.413).
On Wednesday, South Alabama will travel to New Orleans for a 6:30 p.m. contest against Tulane (20-12) at Greer Field at Turchin Stadium.
USA defeated the Green Wave 7-2 last season at Stanky Field, and leads the all-time series 25-24. The Jags are 9-14 all-time at Tulane. USA split a doubleheader the last time they played at Tulane in 2006.
The Green Wave is 3-7 in its last 10 games, and 2-3 in its last five after taking two of three games over the weekend at Central Florida.
Jeremy Schaffer leads Tulane in batting average (.377), runs scored (25), at-bats (122), hits (46), doubles (17), home runs (4), RBI (26), total bases (77), slugging percentage (.631) and on-base percentage (.446).
Tulane is hitting .262 as a team and carries a 3.89 team ERA into Wednesday’s contest.
Green Wave left-hander Wade Konvicka (0-0) will make his first start of the season against South Alabama, which will also mark his first appearance of the year.
