USA SOFTBALL RETURNS TO ACTION AGAINST SOUTHERN MISS

MOBILE, Ala. – After having the past week off the University of South Alabama softball team returns to action when it plays host to Southern Miss in a single-game Wednesday night at Jaguar Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

The Jaguars (24-6) enter the contest after falling to No. 23 Auburn 2-1 last Wednesday. Haley Hopkins led the Jags at the plate with a 2-for-3 performance, scoring the only run of the day for South Alabama. Christin Crocker recorded USA’s only other hit in the contest.  

The Jags are batting .336 as a team and have also recorded a .565 slugging percentage and a .425 on base percentage through 30 games this season.

The Jaguar pitching staff has recorded a 2.12 ERA and has held opposing batters to a .217 batting average. Sophomore pitcher Morgan Druhan (8-2) has a team-leading 102 strikeouts in 70.2 innings of work. Left-hander Hannah Campbell (9-3) leads the team in saves (3) and has recorded 73 strikeouts in 83.1 innings of work.

First baseman Meghan Collins continues to lead the team with a .442 batting average and a .533 on-base percentage. Collins has recorded 10 multi-hit games and 8 multi-RBI games this season.

Sophomore Brittany Fowler has a team-leading 37 hits and 38 RBI. The Jacksonville, Fla., native also leads the team with 14 multi-hit games and 11 multi-RBI games.

USA leads the all-time series over Southern Miss 5-3-1. Earlier this season, USM scored five runs in the bottom of the seventh to come from behind and beat the Jaguars 5-4. The Jags are 3-1 when playing the Golden Eagles at Jaguar Field, 2-1-1 when playing in Hattiesburg, Miss. and 1-0 when playing at a neutral site.

USM (10-20) enters the contest after getting swept by conference USA opponent Houston. The Golden Eagles are 0-6 on the road this season and 2-7 when playing at a neutral site.

Taylor Brown leads the Golden Eagle offense with a .301 batting average, 17 runs and 25 hits. Beth Dietrich (5-10) has recorded 52 strikeouts in 91.2 innings of work.
