BARTSCH CLINCHES 6-1 WIN OVER MISSOURI-ST. LOUIS

USA vs. UMSL box score

MOBILE, Ala.
– University of South Alabama junior Hanno Bartsch (Pretoria, South Africa) defeated Missouri-St. Louis’ Tim Bryant at No. 3 singles to clinch the Jags’ 6-1 win on the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts Tuesday afternoon.

USA improved to 5-5 in dual matches. UMSL fell to 4-3 in their spring campaign.

“Our goal today was to have a really big start,” said USA head coach Nick Brochu. “We knew we were the favorites, but we wanted to make sure that we didn’t play soft, or have too much confidence. The guys did a good job of taking the other team seriously because they were a good team. I told the guys if they started strong and took the early lead it would make their lives much easier and that’s what happened.”

The Jaguars swept all three doubles matches to secure the first point of the afternoon. The USA tandem of sophomore Alex Bernard (Soisy Sur Seine, France) and freshman Parker Allen (Hot Springs, Ark.) secured the point with their 8-4 win over Daniel Anthony and Chetan Panditi in the No. 2 flight.

South Alabama took all but one of the afternoon’s singles matches. The Tritons’ only point of the day came at No. 2 singles when Bernard fell to Panditi 6-4, 1-6, (10-8).

USA picked up two quick straight-sets wins on the No. 4 and No. 6 courts to give the Jags the 3-0 lead.

“As a team, it’s really good to get on the board early,” said Brochu. “It helps take the pressure off the guys who have bigger matches. I’m very proud of four through six. They got the lead early and No. 4 and No. 6 were able to close within 45 minutes. That put us up 3-0 so that was good.”

Bartsch’s 6-4, 6-2 win came next, followed by junior Romain Bocaert’s (Lille, France) 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 1 spot.

Allen got his second win of the season with his 6-0, 7-5 win over Tim Gorter in the No. 5 position.

On April 1-3 the Jags will be in Murfreesboro, Tenn. competing in the Sun Belt Shootout at the Buck Bouldin Tennis Center.
