MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama softball team will face its second Atlantic Coast Conference opponent of the season Wednesday night at 5 p.m. CST when it travels to Tallahassee, Fla., to take on Florida State at JoAnne Graff Field.
The Jaguars (21-4, 2-1 SBC) enter the weekend, after winning their first Sun Belt Conference series over Louisiana-Monroe 5-2, 3-1 on day one and falling 11-3 in the series finale. The loss to the Warhawks snapped the Jags' 15-game win-streak dating back to February 13.
Sophomore pitcher Morgan Druhan picked up two wins last week, striking out 19 batters in 14 innings of work, and allowing only two runs. Hannah Campbell went the distance in the circle to lead the Jaguars to a 5-3 victory over ULM striking out six and walking only three.
The Jags have seven batters hitting over .300 led by sophomore Meghan Collins (.484)
Collins leads the league in batting. She has recorded 31 hits and 19 runs. Last season, Collins recorded 21 hits and 13 runs through 44 games.
Sophomore Brittany Fowler has recorded a team-leading 33 hits and 31 RBI for the Jaguars. Fowler has hit safely in 18 games this season and has recorded 13 multi-hit games and nine multi-RBI games.
Senior short stop Jenny Stevens hit her team-leading seventh home run of the season Saturday against ULM making her the program’s all-time career home run leader (18). Stevens’ is batting .342 and has scored a team-leading 31 runs and 27 hits.
Haley Hopkins and Christin Crocker are tied with six home runs apiece on the season and are also tied on the program’s all-time career home run list (16).
Florida State (12-13) has a 2-0 all-time lead over the Jags. Last season, Druhan posted a solid effort and held 24th-ranked Florida State to just two unearned runs, but it wasn’t enough as the Seminoles held on for a 2-0 victory.
FSU enters the weekend after going 0-4 falling to No. 2 Alabama 9-2 and 8-0 and Mississippi State 8-7 and 9-8. The Seminoles are led by Jen Lapicki and Tiffani Brown. Lapicki has a team-leading .406 batting average, while Brown leads the club with 24 hits and 30 runs.
Wednesdays night’s game will be broadcast on the Sun Sports network.
