USA SOFTBALL CLINCHES FIRST SBC SERIES WIN OVER LOUISIANA-MONROE

MONROE, La. – The University of South Alabama softball team clinched its first Sun Belt Conference series win against Louisiana-Monroe 3-1 in game one, and 5-2 in game two in Monroe, Louisiana.

The Jags improved to 21-3 and extended their win streak to 15.

“I thought we got better as the day went on today and that was the key,” USA head coach Becky Clark said. “We got off to a great start now we just need to finish strong tomorrow.”

Two home runs in game one lifted the Jaguars to a 3-1 victory over ULM in their conference opener.
 
 Senior short stop Jenny Stevens blasted a home run over the center field wall during her first at bat to reclaim the lead as the program’s all-time home run leader.

The Warhawks (11-12, 0-2 SBC) tied the game in the bottom of the first scoring one run.

The Jags pushed one run across in the top of the fifth to regain the lead.

Junior Christin Crocker smoked her fifth home run of the season over the left field wall to put the Jags up 3-2 in top of the sixth.

Crocker led the Jags at the plate going 2-for-3 driving in one and scoring one. Stevens and Meghan Collins both recorded one hit for the Jaguars.

Hannah Campbell went the distance in her first league win striking out six and allowing one unearned run.

Tiffany Mills (5-7) took the loss for ULM in 5.2 innings allowing three earned runs. Heather Fritz came in for 1.1 innings of relief.  

In game two, USA outhit ULM 10-6.

The Warhawks jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first scoring one run.

The Jaguars came alive in the top of the fifth scoring three runs on four hits. Stevens hit an RBI-single to the right side to drive in Collins who walked to begin the inning. Brittany Fowler then singled to short to bring Stevens home. Crocker continued her hot streak by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field driving in Britany Campbell.

ULM pulled within one in the bottom of the sixth.

The Jags responded in the top of the seventh when Haley Hopkins hit a two RBI-single to right scoring Stevens and Fowler.

Hopkins and Julie Moss led USA at the plate going 2-for-4. Stevens, Campbell, Fowler, Katy Neal, Collins and Carolina  Mendoza all recorded a hit for the Jaguars.

Druhan went the distance in the circle to earn her seventh complete game win of the season, striking out four and allowing only two runs.

ULM Pitcher Stephanie Routzon took the loss for the Warhawks in 4.2 innings allowing three runs. Heather Fritz came in for 2.1 innings of relief.

The Jaguars returns to action Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. when they take on ULM in the final game of the series.
