OXFORD, Miss. – Senior shortstop Jenny Stevens hit a three RBI-home run in the top of the fourth to lift the Jags over Austin Peay 4-1, in the final day of the Red and Blue Classic at the Ole Miss Softball Complex.
“Everyone did their part this weekend,” USA head coach Becky Clark said. “We are playing very good team softball.” We had good pitching, great defense and our hitting was where it needed to be.”
After the weekend, Fowler has recorded a hit in the last nine games and leads the team in multi-hit games (9) and multi-RBI games (7). Stevens has also recorded a hit in the last nine games.
The Jags (12-3) scored one run in the bottom of the first when Christin Crocker walked to drive in Stevens, who singled and then stole second to begin the inning.
Stevens reclaimed the lead as the program’s all time career home run leader on a three run shot to the deepest part of the park in the bottom of the fourth.
Junior pitcher Lindsey Croft relinquished her first hit in the top of the fifth.
In the top of the sixth, APSU scored its first run of the game.
Freshman pitcher Hannah Campbell came in for relief in the top of the sixth with one out and the bases loaded. She helped the Jags get out of the jam striking out both of the APSU batters she faced.
Croft (5-0) earned the win going 5.1 innings in the circle and striking out five Lady Gov batters. Campbell earned her second career save in 1.2 innings striking out three out of the five batters that she faced.
APSU (2-11) pitcher Taylor Mills took the loss for Austin Peay.
South Alabama returns home on Wednesday to take on Nicholls at 5 p.m.
