MOBILE, Ala. – The University of South Alabama scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning and held on to win, 7-1 over Southeastern Louisiana Sunday afternoon in the final game of the South Alabama Invitational at Jaguar Field.
Lindsey Croft (3-0) earned the win after going the distance in the circle and striking out six.
Sophomore centerfielder Britany Campbell led the Jags at the plate going 3-for-4 and scoring one. After today’s game Campbell has a team-leading three doubles and two triples. She also leads team in stolen bases (6-6).
Jenny Stevens went 2-for-3 at the plate – hitting her fourth home run of the season ¬¬– scoring two and driving in one. She is now tied for first with Haley Hopkins on USA’s all-time career home runs list (15).
USA jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first scoring four runs on five hits. Brittany Fowler hit a two RBI-single driving in Stevens who walked to begin the inning and Campbell who advanced on a bunt single. Julie Moss singled to right center driving in Fowler. Katy Neal then singled to right center driving in Hopkins.
The Golden Lions scored their only run in the top of the second when Jessie Browne doubled to left center to drive in Tori Sheppard, who reached on an error to start the inning.
Christin Crocker doubled to right center followed by Hopkins’s RBI-double. Moss then hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Crocker to give the Jags a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the third.
In the bottom of the sixth Jenny Stevens launched a home run over the right center field wall.
Brown took the loss for Southeastern in one inning allowing four earned runs on six hits. Vicki Honeycutt pitched .2 innings of relief, while Kati Morse came in for 4.1 innings of relief allowing three runs on eight hits.
The Jags return to action Friday when they travel to Oxford, Miss., to take on Louisiana Tech at 11 a.m. as a part of the Red Blue Classic.
