THOMASVILLE, Ga. – The University of South Alabama men’s tennis team earned a doubles win Sunday on the final day of the Thomasville Invitational.
“The tournament as a whole was very good, especially from what I saw on the court,” said USA head coach
Nick Brochu. “It will help those two guys get ready for the rest of the fall season.”
In doubles play, freshman
Parker Allen (Hot Springs, Ark.) and junior
Dauw Kruger (Pretoria, South Africa) defeated the Florida State team of Jordan Kelly-Houston and Blake Davis 9-7.
“The biggest thing we worked on over the weekend is if you find yourself in a hole, what are you going to do over the next few points to get out of it? We improved that on Saturday and Sunday, especially in doubles,” said Brochu.
In singles action, Kruger lost his only match of the day, 6-2, 6-4 to Davis in the North bracket finals.
Kruger split his four matches on the weekend.
“Dauw was in good shape and played some good tennis,” said Brochu. “He had a really good tournament but needed to be a little bit sharper as far as execution and shot selection is concerned.”
Allen was defeated in his singles match by Owen Long of Florida State 6-4, 6-3.
“Clay is not Parker’s best surface,” said Brochu. “He hadn’t played on the surface a lot as a junior so this weekend was a huge adjustment for him. But after his matches we were able to see that we need to work on shot selection and the ability to finish off the opponent when you have a chance to break. In college when you don’t close the door when you have the chance, your opponent will come back.”
The Jaguars return to the court Sept. 24-26 at the Southern Intercollegiate in Athens, Ga.
