MOBILE, Ala. - University of South Alabama softball player Brittany Fowler picked up postseason accolades when she was selected to the all-Sun Belt Conference team, which was announced Tuesday by the league office.
"Brittany has had a great year for us," USA head coach Becky Clark said. "Her biggest asset all year has been her consistency. She gives the same effort day in and day out and always comes to the field ready to compete. She definitely doesn't play like a freshman; I'm excited to see how she develops over the next three years."
Fowler, who received second-team honors at second base, has made an immediate impact in the Jaguar lineup this season. She owns a team-leading batting average of .346 on the year and paces the Jags in runs (32), hits (46), and is second in doubles (nine). She is among the league leaders in five different categories. Entering the SBC tournament she is tied for third in triples with two other players (third). She also ranks in the top 10 in batting average (eighth), runs scored (T-seventh), on base percentage (seventh).The Jacksonville, Fla., native batted .328 conference play, while she has a team-leading 12 multi-hit games and had a five-game hitting streak earlier this season.
USA, the fifth seed, will open SBC tournament action with a 5:30 p.m. first round contest Wednesday against fourth-seeded Florida Atlantic at Jaguar Field.
Tickets for this week's tournament are still available. Adults can purchase individual day tickets at the front gate to Jaguar Field for $7, while admission for youth (2-12) and senior citizens (55+) is $5. All Sun Belt students will be admitted free with a valid student ID.
Fans unable to attend also can follow the Jaguars at the SBC Championship via the web. Live stats and the webcast can both be accessed at www.sunbeltsports.org. Individuals can subscribe to the webcast for a one-time payment of $9.95. Saturday's championship game will be televised on CSS.
