SMITH NAMED SUN BELT CONFERENCE SOCCER PLAYER OF THE WEEK

NEW ORLEANS ? University of South Alabama soccer forward Brandi Smith was named the Sun Belt Conference Player of the Week Tuesday, as announced by the conference office.

Smith scored three goals and tallied two assists over the weekend to lead the Jags to their first back-to-back road wins of the season. With the wins, USA clinched its ninth-consecutive Sun Belt Conference Tournament berth.

“Brandi played a total game in each match this weekend and is very deserving of this award,” USA head coach Mike Varga said. “She was very composed on the goals she scored and did very well with her chances, and she also set up a couple of important goals. As far as our attack went, she was a big part of it. She did what we asked her to do, and worked hard defensively, which helped us a lot.”

The freshman from Oak Leaf, Texas scored two goals and had one assist in a 4-1 win over Louisiana-Monroe Friday in Monroe, La. Smith scored one goal and assisted on the Jags’ game-winning goal in double overtime in a 3-2 win over Louisiana-Lafayette Sunday in Lafayette, La.

Smith leads the SBC in goals per game (0.76), and ranks second in the conference in goals (13) and points per game (1.65). She currently holds the fifth-highest season total for goals in the program’s history, which is the most for a USA freshman since 2000.

Smith leads the Jags in goals, points (28), game-winning goals (2), shots (38) and shots on goal (26). USA is 5-1-1 this season when Smith scores, and 3-0-1 in conference games when she scores a goal.
