Newton went unbeaten in singles and doubles to extend South Alabama’s season-opening win streak to eight last week. She went 2-0 at Nos. 2 and 3 in singles and won a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles, did not lose a set in singles and closed out both opponents with a 6-0 final set. She defeated Karina Gurgenyan of Southern Miss 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3, then clinched the Jags’ 5-2 victory over Samford with a 7-6 (7-5) win over Yasmeen Ebada at No. 2. In doubles, she teamed with Laura Valkova for an 8-3 win vs. Southern Miss, and an 8-4 victory over Samford, improving to 8-0 in singles and 7-0 in doubles this spring.
