USA'S JAKE JOHNSON ADDED TO SENIOR BOWL ROSTERS

Jake Johnson will play for the South in the 2013 Senior Bowl Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium.

MOBILE, Ala. – Former University of South Alabama inside linebacker Jake Johnson will participate in his second postseason all-star contest in as many weeks after it was announced Wednesday that he has been added to the South team roster for the 2013 Senior Bowl.

On Saturday, the 6-foot-1, 240-pound three-year letterwinner for the Jaguars posted four total stops for the American squad at the NFLPA Collegiate Bowl in Carson, Calif.

The Senior Bowl will kick off at 3 p.m. Saturday at Ladd-Peebles Stadium, and will air live on the NFL Network.  The network will also have coverage of the South team’s practice Wednesday at 2 p.m. and will air both squads’ workouts at 1 p.m. Thursday as well.

It’s the second time in USA’s four seasons of competition that the program has had an individual invited to participate in the Senior Bowl — Courtney Smith played for the South in the 2011 contest.

Johnson, who originally hails from Fredericksburg, Va., recorded 245 total tackles in his three years with the Jaguars, which included 25½ behind the line of scrimmage and nine sacks.  He collected 10 or more stops on eight occasions in the last two seasons, and was also credited with two forced fumbles, a pair of fumble recoveries and two passes defensed.

A first-team all-Sun Belt Conference selection this fall, he posted 131 stops with 15 for loss — Johnson was the only individual in the league to average 10-plus tackles per outing — and was credited with six quarterback hurries in 13 games.  Johnson led the Jaguars in tackles on seven occasions, and he recorded 10 or more stops five times highlighted by a season-best 15 in match-ups with Florida International and Middle Tennessee the final month of the season.  Prior to the start of conference action, Johnson collected 14 tackles at North Carolina State and he also had 10 stops at No. 23 Mississippi State.
