Amorrow Morgan, a former assistant at Nicholls under head coach Richie Riley, joined the South Alabama coaching staff in April 2018 and was promoted to associate head coach prior to the 2019-20 season.
Morgan has played a critical role in the team’s success over the last two seasons, helping the Jags post a 37-28 record overall including a 20-11 mark — the program’s first 20-win campaign since 2008-09 — a year ago; that included a 13-7 mark in Sun Belt Conference action as South secured the second seed at the league tournament. Over the summer, he was ranked third on Stadium’s list of the top men’s basketball assistant coaches in the league.
In his role with the Jaguars, Morgan oversaw the development of Josh Ajayi and Trhae Mitchell as both earned all-Sun Belt honors each of their last two seasons in the program.  Ajayi ranked in the top 10 in the league in both scoring (16.4 ppg) and rebounding (7.4 rpg) his junior year to be named second-team all-league, earning first-team all-conference honors the following season after pacing the team in scoring (14.6 ppg), rebounding (7.2 rpg) and field-goal percentage (56.2%) as he led the Sun Belt in the latter category and was second with eight double-doubles.  Morgan’s efforts helped Mitchell make a huge jump as a junior, nearly doubling his scoring output from the season prior after averaging 13.6 points per contest while becoming just the second USA player to have 200 rebounds and 100 assists in a season en route to earning third-team all-conference honors.  He led South in assists (77) and blocks (47) his senior season as well, and after averaging 11.1 points and 5.8 rebounds per outing was once again selected third-team all-Sun Belt.
Both Ajayi (LNB Pro B league in France) and Mitchell (NBA G League) moved on to the professional level following their Jaguar careers.
His first year on the staff, the Jaguars posted their highest win total in six years and set a new school record for 3-pointers as a team. Part of that effort came from Kory Holden, who despite battling injuries all season, ranked second on the team in 3s with 63 and posted the fourth-best 3-point percentage in school history (.467). Holden also put his name in the record books with an 8-for-10 performance from long distance at Southern Miss, putting him in a tie for third for 3s in a game and a tie for fifth in single-game 3-point percentage.
Morgan was a member of Riley’s staff in 2017-18, where the Colonels shared the Southland Conference title, recorded their most wins in a season (21) since 1995, and won a league crown for the first time in 20 years.
Roddy Peters earned all-conference distinction, the first Colonel to do so in four years, and was the league’s newcomer of the year. Tevon Saddler was also voted to the all-Southland team, and Javaughn Powell was tabbed to the all-defensive team.
Peters (19.7 ppg) and Saddler (15.8) finished the year in the SLC’s top six in scoring, and paced the Southland’s highest-scoring team (82.5).
The Colonels were in the conference’s top three in eight statistical categories, and ranked in the top 25 nationally in scoring average and field-goal percentage (.472).
Before coming to Nicholls, Morgan spent two seasons at Henderson State (Ark.) as an assistant coach. The Reddies increased their team GPA in Morgan’s final two semesters, and posted a seven-win improvement in his second year, going 16-13 in 2016-17 for the program’s best record in five years.
In addition to the increase in wins, HSU went from 68.0 points per game to 79.4, and upped its field-goal percentage from .423 to .455, to rank fourth in the Great American Conference in both categories. The Reddies led the league in free-throw percentage (.754), steals (7.4) and turnover margin (+3.17).
Morgan started his coaching career at Illinois-Springfield in 2013-14, where the Prairie Stars won the school’s first playoff game, before moving on the Our Lady of the Lake (Texas). The Saints went 25-6 in his lone season, won the Red River Conference regular-season title, and advanced to the NAIA round of 16.
As a player, Morgan was a two-time all-Big Sky performer – becoming one of 19 players in school history to earn all-conference distinction more than once – and served as team captain for three seasons. He led the team in scoring in each of his final two seasons, and posted a 16.6 average as a senior, sixth best in the Big Sky.
In his junior campaign, Morgan ranked fifth in the league in scoring, averaging 13.6 per contest, and finished third in assists (3.7) and sixth in assist/turnover ratio (1.1).
Morgan played professionally in Europe for three seasons, concluding with a one-year stint with SC Itzehoe Eagles in Germany, where he led the team in scoring.
The Memphis, Tenn. native graduated from Cordova High School in 2005, then moved on to play one year for legendary Chris Chaney at the Patterson School. That season’s roster included future NBA players Jordan Hill, Devin Ebanks and Wesley Johnson.
Morgan also played for the Nike Memphis YOMCA AAU program.
A 2012 graduate from Idaho State, Morgan has a degree in physical education with an emphasis in sport management, and is currently working on a master’s degree in sport management from Henderson State.
Morgan is married to the former Michelle Bailey
