Biography

2014-15: One of two players to start all 33 games… Fourth on the team in scoring (7.4), first in assists (104), and second in 3-pointers (42) and 3-point percentage (.350)… Assist total is highest by USA player since 2007-08… Ranked third in the Sun Belt in assist/turnover ratio (2.00), seventh in assists per game (3.2) and 14th in 3-point percentage… Became just second Jaguar in school history to have multiple seasons with assist/turnover ratio of 2.00 or better… Had just five games where he had more turnovers than assists… Averaged 13.0 points over the final three games of the season, shooting 52.0 percent from the floor and 52.6 percent from 3-point land, including a career-highs of 19 points and five 3-pointers in win over Troy (3/7) in regular-season finale… Tallied 17 points on 6 of 9 shooting overall, tied season high with seven rebounds and gave out six assists with no turnovers vs. Louisiana-Lafayette (1/29)… Set new career high with seven assists at Texas-Arlington (1/3), then dished out six his next time out at Arkansas-Little Rock (1/5)… Had 12 assists over three-game stretch during conference season with no turnovers.

2013-14: Started 23 times in 31 appearances… Led the team with 86 assists, ranked third in 3-pointers (27) and fifth in scoring (7.2 ppg)… Averaged 2.8 assists per contest, 11th-best in the Sun Belt Conference… His 2.0 assist-turnover ratio is the best by a Jaguar since 1988-89… Hit double-digit points nine times, with three of those coming in the first five games… Led team in assists 16 times, dishing out six in a game three times, all in a four-game stretch in February… Averaged 4.6 assists per outing with a 2.9 assist-turnover ratio in a seven-game span in late January and February… Shot 5-for-7 from the floor for 13 points at Troy (2/6) and handed out six assists with just one turnover… Made all four 3-point attempts and went 6-for-8 from the floor for a career-best 18 points at Louisiana-Lafayette (3/2)… Set new personal-best with eight rebounds vs. Gonzaga (12/14)… Dished out nine assists with only one turnover combined in wins over Wright State (11/23) and Houston Baptist (11/24).

2012-13: Appeared in 28 games with nine starts… Averaged 3.7 points, shot 37.1 percent from the floor and 34.1 percent from 3-point land… Six of nine starts came against Sun Belt opposition… Scored career-high 17 points vs. Arkansas-Little Rock (12/22), shooting 3-for-4 from behind the arc and 4-for-8 from the floor… He added six points from the free throw line against the Trojans, setting new personal best with six conversions in eight attempts… Also reached double-digit points in home win over Florida International, shooting 3-for-4 from the field and making all three long-range attempts… Dished out three assists three different times, twice against Louisiana-Lafayette (1/10 & 2/14)… Recorded multiple steals four times, including career-high three vs. Arkansas State (1/31).

Prep School: Played one season at St. Thomas More in Oakdale, Conn.

High School: Earned four varsity letters at Allen High School in Allen, Texas… Averaged 11.9 points and 3.1 assists as a senior… Led Eagles to their first playoff appearance in 12 years during 2010 season… Set school record with 14 assists in a game… Scored 30 points in a playoff-clinching game and hit the game-winning shot… Played two seasons with TX Southwest Elite club team… Played on team that won a GASO (Great American ShootOut) championship and a runner-up finish at Las Vegas FAB 48… Earned MVP honors at GASO-San Antonio.

Smith and mother played softball at North Carolina A&T… Is a distant cousin of Emmitt Smith, former running back for the Dallas Cowboys… Lists hobbies as basketball, video games, hanging with friends, movies and playing golf with his father… Chose South Alabama because he felt loved by the coaching staff and it was a good fit… Goals for the season are to make the NCAA Tournament and be a first team all-conference player… Favorites – movie: “Training Day”; book: the Bible; teams: Oklahoma City Thunder and Dallas Cowboys; athletes: Kevin Durant, Kyrie Irving and Steph Curry; musical artists: Erica Badu, J Cole and Kendrick Lamar; food: likes all food; classes: geology… Likes basketball, food, quality time with his family and reading the Bible, and dislikes negative people, bad attitudes, ungrateful people and laziness… Reflects on how far he’s come and remember that no one owes him anything before a game… Pre-game ritual is to pray… Celebrity he’d like to meet is Stephen Curry… Best part of playing sports is you go through all of the ups and downs with your brothers, you know they have your back and vice versa… Most people don’t know that he can sing… Thankful for “life, health, strength for myself and loved ones and the ability to play the game I love”… Interning with JagNation TV, and wants to work on highlight tapes and documentaries… Wants to play professionally before moving into the coaching ranks… Three wishes: play in the NBA, help his brother reach his full potential as a man and a player, and make sure anyone in his circle is taken care of.
