Junior College (Iowa Western CC):  Played two years for coach Marc Rardin at Iowa Western Community College • Was limited to three appearances in sophomore season • Threw 12.1 innings, striking out 12 and walking just one on his way to a 4.38 ERA • As a freshman, helped Reivers to Junior College World Series • Pitched 54 innings over 15 appearances • Went 7-2 with a 5.67 ERA, and struck out 48 against 21 walks.

High School:  Played four years of baseball and basketball at Mount Ayr Community High School in Mount Ayr, Iowa • Holds school records for strikeouts and batting average • Posted a career record of 35-9 with a 1.46 ERA and 458 strikeouts on his way to being named all-state three times • Was honored as winner of Class 2A Bob Feller Pitching Award after going 11-1 with a 0.97 ERA and 128 strikeouts as a senior.
