LOS ANGELES, Calif.? The University of South Alabama men's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match, 4-2, against No. 50 SMU in the second game of the ITA Indoor Championship.
“It was a very close match and the guys battled hard until the end,” head coach Nicolas Brochu said. “Aaron did great, winning his match early and giving good motivation to the top guys. We need to get back to practice and work harder. It's a long season and we have many tough teams ahead of us."
The No. 72 Jags started strong with a doubles win at the No. 1 position. Sergio Ramirez and Leo Dominguez defeated David Costa and Artem Bardach 8-0. USA then dropped the next two matches, giving SMU the doubles point.
“We had our chances to take the lead in doubles. We now realize how important the doubles point is,” Brochu said.
Sophomore Aaron Krisan struck back, winning the first singles match 6-2, 6-4 at the No. 6 position. The Jags then dropped at the No. 4 and No. 5 position, giving the Mustangs the lead. South Alabama hung in to win one more singles match at the No.1 position, until Dominguez fell to 118-ranked Bardach 3-6, 6-1, 6-1.
The Jaguars will be back in action Feb. 8 to take on Florida State in Tallahassee, Fla. at 1 p.m.
