MOBILE, Ala. -- South Alabama continues its five-game road trip this week with a pair of games at Southeastern Conference member Mississippi State. First pitch for contests Tuesday and Wednesday nights at Dudy Noble Field is at 6:30 p.m.
The Jaguars (12-10) earned a 10-7 victory over New Orleans on Sunday after dropping the first two games of the Sun Belt Conference weekend series. They rallied from a 6-2 deficit after six innings by scoring two runs in the seventh and five in the eighth for the win. Travis Johnson pitched an inning of scoreless relief for his first career victory, while Greg Johnson closed the game for this fourth save of the year.
Offensively, David Doss went 4-for-4, while Ray Kruml was 3-for-6 with three runs batted in. Ryan Bohanan also drove in three runs. Ryne Jernigan is having a triple crown season, leading the team in average (.372), home runs (five) and RBIs (31). Doss has seen his average climb to .369 during a current nine-game hitting streak.
Sophomore Chris LaGrow will take the mound on Tuesday against Mississippi State. Last year's closer, LaGrow missed the first part of the season nursing an injury, but pitched three solid innings in his 2008 debut last week vs. Nicholls State. He allowed one earned run and two hits for a 3.00 ERA. Wednesday's starter has not yet been decided.
The 9-12 Bulldogs will counter with righthanders Greg Houston (0-0, 5.84) on Tuesday and Jared Wesson (0-1, 13.50) on Wednesday. Both players will be making their first career starts. Junior outfielder Grant Hogue (.404) paces MSU at the plate. The Bulldog lead-off hitter compiled an 11-game hitting streak earlier this season and had five hits during a weekend sweep by 11th-ranked South Carolina.
Both games will be aired live on the radio on WNSP-FM (105.5). Jaguar Nation subscribers will have access to Mississippi State's "Maroon to the Max" audio and video coverage.
