LAFAYETTE, La. ? Jeff Cunningham went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four runs batted in, but South Alabama was unable to stop the Cajuns, as ULL defeated the Jags to sweep the series, by a score of 10-6 at M.L. Tigue Moore Field in Lafayette, La. Sunday afternoon.
Joey Doan (1-2) took the loss for the Jags after going four innings and allowing six earned runs. Hunter Moody, the Sun Belt Pre-Season Pitcher of the Year, picked up the win for ULL. He is now 2-1 on the season. South Alabama drops to 11-7 and 0-3 in the Sun Belt. Louisiana-Lafayette improves to 14-3 and 3-0 in SBC action.
The Cajuns scored in five of the first six innings, which included a big three-run first inning. The Cajuns then put the game out of reach with a four-run sixth, to go up 10-2.
Cunningham’s home runs came in the fifth inning, a solo shot to right field, and a three-run bomb to center in the eighth. Cunningham now leads the team with nine home runs on the season. Dating back to last season, Cunningham has ripped five home runs in his last four games against the Cajuns.
Next up for South Alabama is a mid-week game against Southern Miss, Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Stanky Field. Southern Miss took the first game against the Jags Feb. 20 in Hattiesburg.
