South Alabama basketball fans can get their first serious look at the 2007-08 Jaguars this Sunday when they conduct an open intrasquad scrimmage at Jaguar Gymnasium. While the team will start practice at 6 p.m., the scrimmage portion begins an hour later.
The practice session will feature a regulation game with the possibility of an extra half. The team has been divided into Blue and White squads with Doan Merritt and Demetric Bennett leading the Blue and Daniel Hayles and DeAndre Coleman heading up the White.
“We hope to get a better read on what we have put in over the first week of practice,” Head Coach Ronnie Arrow said. “This will be a true game situation with assistants leading the teams, with a halftime and with substitutions. This will serve as a measuring stick of everything we have done so far.”
While all phases of the game will be judged and reviewed, Arrow and his staff are looking toward the defensive end of the floor. “We have worked a whole lot more on defense instead of offense,” Arrow continued. “We want to see pressure and aggressive play from everyone on defense.”
The Jaguars continue preparations for their exhibition opener, Monday, Nov. 5 against Spring Hill. The regular season tips off in just over three weeks, Saturday, Nov. 10 against West Florida.
