After a fantastic freshman season, Jag designated hitter and right-handed pitcher David Doss was named to his second All-American team. The Tate High School alum was named to the Rivals.com Freshman All-American second team, as a designated hitter. The first and second teams were announced Thursday.
Doss put up huge numbers in his debut season for the Jaguars. He batted .400 with seven home runs and 39 RBIs. Doss took over the DH role part way through the season and never looked back. Since the end of the season, he has continued to pile up the awards. Along with being named Freshman of the Year in the Sun Belt Conference, Doss has also been named to the Collegiate Baseball All-American Team.
Doss and teammate David Freese were the first Jags since Mike Maksudian to hit over .400 in a season. Maksudian batted .407 in 1987. Freese finished the year at .414. It was the first time teammates have recorded marks over .400 since Steve Morrison and Jerry Carpenter did it in 1978.
After missing five games due to injury, a stretch where the Jags went 2-3, Doss returned and led the Jags to a 19-4 record to finish the regular season. During those 23 games, Doss hammered 5 home runs and batted .407. He ripped 12 doubles and slugged .721.
The teams were chosen by Rivals.com's College Baseball expert Kendall Rogers, who used statistical and observational factors to come up with the teams.
