MOBILE Ala. - South Alabama took advantage of five Southeastern Louisiana errors and overcame a season high 16 men left on base, to capture a 6-3 win Wednesday night at Stanky Field. The Jags have now won two consecutive games and are heading into a three-game weekend series against Florida International.

David Freese threw six solid innings, collecting his second win of the season. USA improves to 20-13. Joey Doan pitched three innings in relief, allowing one unearned run. Matt Moser took the loss for SELU and fell to 0-1. The Lions dropped to 13-14 on the season. Freese and Joel Collins each had RBI’s in the win.

Southeastern Louisiana drew first blood with a single run in the top of the third inning off of the USA starter Freese. Scott Viator then picked up a one out double down the right field line. After a fly out by Ty Summerlin, Richard Imhoff lined a single up the middle, to plate Viator and give SELU a 1-0 lead.

USA answered in the bottom of the third. Freese got it started with a base hit up the middle. Aaron George followed with a solid single to left field putting two on with one out. Guillermo Martinez grounded out to third base. SELU starter Wade Miley then walked Jeff Cunningham, and was relieved by Matt Moser. Moser promptly plunked Joel Collins with an 0-1 curveball to force in a run and tie the game at one.

The Lions took the lead in the top of the fifth inning when they scored a single run. Jason Waguespack took a 2-1 Freese offering over the center field wall for his first home run of the season and a 2-1 SELU lead.

The Jags battled back to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning. Jones led off with an infield single which was followed by what looked to be a harmless fly ball to center field. The Jags got a break when Tony Suarez lost the ball in a tough sky, to put runners at second and third with nobody out. Freese grounded to the shortstop Imhoff, and reached when the ball went through the fielder’s legs, scoring Jones and putting Weaver on third. A wild pitch scored Weaver to put the Jags up by a 3-2 score.

South Alabama added to its lead in the bottom of the seventh. Collins reached on a fielding error by Imhoff at shortstop to open the inning. Ben Daw was then hit by a pitch. Jeff Morris dropped a bunt base hit to load the bases. After a fielder’s choice to Jones, Weaver popped up to second bringing Freese to the plate. Freese then lined to the left fielder, but Ryan Spencer dropped the ball scoring two. Spencer’s throw to the infield was taken by Imhoff who fired it into the Jag dugout, plating the sixth USA run.

SELU plated one unearned run in the top of the eighth inning. Viator reached on a fielder’s choice and advanced all the way to third on a throwing error by Doan. Summerlin picked up an RBI, when he grounded out to Martinez at shortstop.

Doan pitched three innings in relief of Freese to pick up his first save of the season. Both Freese and Doan combined to not walk a batter in the contest.

Next up for the Jags is a weekend Sun Belt Conference series with Florida International. Saturday’s game will be televised by CSS channel 37 in the Mobile area. Tickets are available at the door and can be purchased by calling the USA Ticket Office at 460-6047.
