Box Score

MOBILE, Ala. - Jaguar freshman David Doss went 3-for-4 at the plate, with two doubles and a homerun. He also pitched two innings of relief, allowing only an unearned run, while racking up four K’s, in USA’s lopsided 12-2 run-rule win, over Nicholls State Tuesday night at Stanky Field.

Tyler Jones went 4-for-5 with a run and two stolen bases. David Freese went deep for his 10th homerun of the season extending his hitting streak to 12 games. Freese also had three RBI’s to boost his team leading total to 54.

“We pitched well and we swung the bats well,” said Jag head coach Steve Kittrell. “It was important for us to score every time they scored. I thought the guys responded well. We just have to play every game hard from here on out.”

The Jags got on the board in the first inning. Jones led off the Jag first with a base hit up the middle. Patrick Weaver then dropped a beautiful bunt single up the third base line. Freese then hammered his 10th homerun of the season to left field. The three-run bomb put the Jags up 3-0.

Nicholls State cut into the USA lead with a single run in the top of the third. Quinton Corley picked up a one-out single to left center field. Thomas Bourne then ripped a double into the right center field gap. Corley came all the way from first to plate the first Colonel run.

South Alabama blew the game open with four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Freese got it started with a base hit up the middle. Jeff Cunningham then walked. Both runners were sacrificed into scoring position on a Doss bunt. Guillermo Martinez then lofted a sacrifice fly to center field, to put the Jags up four. Colonel starter Ray Labat looked to get out of the inning, but right fielder Michael Roberts dropped a Bill Kleinschrodt fly ball, to extend the inning. The Jags scored three unearned runs after the error. Ben Daw and Jones each collected RBI singles after the third out should have been made.

Doss made one lucky Jag fan very happy. His solo homerun in the fourth put the Jags up 8-1. It was Doss’ fifth homerun of the season and came in the Pillars Homerun Inning. The homerun gave Tom Woodford a $100 gift certificate to the restaurant.

South Alabama got a scare in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Freese was hit in the head by a Nick Augustavo pitch. After heading to first base, Freese was lifted from the game for precautionary reasons. He was replaced by Jeff Morris.

The Colonels scored their second run in the top of the seventh inning. Daw committed a throwing error with one out. A wild pitch moved him to second and he subsequently scored on a single by Corley.

The Jags added to their lead in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back doubles by Cunningham and Doss. It was Doss’ third extra-base hit of the game. Joel Collins lashed a base hit to left field, scoring Doss. As Collins tried to advance to second, the throw from cut-off man Jose Higuera sailed into right field, extending the Jag inning. Daw then bounced single through the left side to give USA an 11-2 lead.

The Jags ended the game with a single run in the eighth inning. Morris came around to score on a throwing error to Ted Wilke. The final score was USA 12, NSU 2.

Eric Gonzalez picked up the win for USA improving to 4-3. Labat took the loss for NSU working four innings, giving up eight runs. Doss and Christianson both pitched in relief for the Jags. Christianson looked good in his one inning of work, not allowing a run and fanning one hitter.

The Jags will be back in action starting Friday night with the first game of a three-game Sun Belt Conference series. All three games will be aired on WNSP 105.5. Tickets can be picked up at the gate or can be purchased by calling the USA Ticket Office at 460-6047.
