MOBILE, Ala. -The University
of South Alabama baseball ran into another hot pitcher Sunday, only
collecting four hits against Tulane starter Stephen Porlier in a
7-2 loss to the No. 14 Tulane Green Wave Sunday at Stanky Field.
South Alabama drops to 15-8 on the season.
Joey Doan took
the loss for the Jags falling to 2-2. Stephen Porlier picked up
the win for Tulane (14-8) improving to 3-1. David Freese went 3-for-3
with a run batted in, upping his batting average to a team high
.422.
“I was
expecting our team to come out with some fire today,” said
USA head coach Steve Kittrell. “Tulane really capitalized
on every mistake that we made.”
USA got on the
board in the first inning. Tyler Jones was hit by a pitch to open
the Jag half of the inning. He then stole second and moved to third
on a Patrick Weaver ground out to second base. David Freese then
lifted a sacrifice fly to left field plating Jones. For Freese it
was his 37 RBI of the season.
Tulane answered
in the top of the second inning, scoring two runs off of USA starter
Joey Doan. Mark Hamilton led off with a single. Anthony Scelfo picked
up a two out hit to left center field cutting the lead to one. Tulane
drew even on a Jag miscue when a Joel Collins throw to second base
went into center field. Scelfo scampered home to tie the game at
two.
The Green Wave
took the lead with a single run in the top of the fourth. Hamilton
drew a leadoff walk which was followed by a Cat Everett single.
Scelfo then picked up his second single and second RBI of the game
by singling home Hamilton for a 3-2 lead.
Tulane added
its fourth run of the game in the top of the sixth inning. Nathan
Southard opened the inning by tripling off of the left center field
wall on a ball the eluded Jones in center field by inches. Hamilton
then knocked in Southard with a groundball to second base, making
the score 4-2 Tulane.
The Green Wave
pushed across its fifth run in the top of the seventh chasing Doan.
Scelfo singled for the third time and was sacrificed to second by
Seth Henry. Pitch hitter Sean Morgan then ripped a single plating
Scelfo. Doan gave way to Chase Christianson who then gave up a double
into the left center field gap scoring the pitch runner Will Rice,
giving Tulane a 6-2 lead.
Tulane put the
game out of reach in the top of the ninth inning when it plated
its seventh run. Selfo walked and scored on Matt Riser’s single
up the middle pushing the lead to 7-2.
Green Wave reliever
Daniel Latham pitched a scoreless ninth inning to lock up the Tulane
win.
