MOBILE,

- The late Bill and Marilyn Lubel, longtime South Alabama tennis
supporters, will be inducted into the Alabama Tennis Association
Hall of Fame on Saturday March 11 in Birmingham, Ala. Jaguar men's
tennis head coach Scott Novak will be on hand to present the honor
to the surviving Lubel children; Glen Lubel, Linda Bradley and Elain
Raymond.
"Bill and
Marilyn were the catalyst behind the success our tennis programs,"
South Alabama Athletic Director Joe Gottfried said, "Without
them, we would never have been able to compete at such high level,
as we do today. It is a very deserving honor and we are proud to
have had them as a part of our program."
"The Lubels
were a great inspiration to the university tennis program,"
said Novak, "I am happy that the Alabama Tennis Association
is honoring them on the state level. The university was fortunate
to have Bill and Marilyn make such a positive impact on so many
athletes' lives. I am happy they are being inducted together because
they truly worked as team for so many years to develop the tennis
program and help it to prosper."
In 1975, Marilyn
Lubel started the women's tennis program at South Alabama. She served
as head coach for six years, going 60-32 in that span. In 1979,
with husband Bill, guided the men's program until 1980. Marilyn
served as associate coach for both programs from 1980 until 2003.
The Bruce David
Memorial Tennis Courts, the on-campus home of Jaguar tennis, were
established their son's memory in February of 1980. Marilyn Lubel
was inducted into the South Alabama Hall of Fame in 1991. She was
active in the United States Professional Tennis Association, the
Southern USPTA, the Alabama Tennis Association, and the USTA.
