Ala. - The University of South Alabama men's tennis team
improved to 5-0 on the young season with a pair of 7-0 decisions
over Tennessee Tech and Troy on Sunday at the Bruce David Lubel
Memorial Courts.
"I'm proud of our guys for winning four matches in two days,"
Jaguar head coach Scott Novak said. "We are going to need to
be at our best at South Florida next week."
USA opened the day with an 8:30 a.m. match against Tennessee Tech,
who knocked off Stetson on Saturday for its first win of the season,
4-3. The Golden Eagles gave the Jaguars everything but the kitchen
sink. USA's duo of Jack Baker and Robert Hodel defeated Juan Pablo
Gomez and Tiago Gilioli, 8-3 at the no. 2 position, but dropped
the no. 1 position, 8-3 as TTU's Shiaski Shimizu and Holger Schaefers
defeated RJ Nagel adn Monte Tucker, 8-3.
With the doubles point in doubt going to the third match, USA's
Filip Kricka and Sam Huffman defeated Mick Panzeni and Borch Zarco,
8-4 to win the point.
The top three positions won in straight sets for the Jaguars in
singles to put USA up 4-0 and win the match. Kricka, at no. 5, won
in straight sets, but Nagel and Huffman, at no. 4 and no. 6, respectively,
needed three-set tiebreakers to win.
"This was one of the closest 7-0 victories we've had,"
Novak said. "We have a lot of respect for Tennessee Tech and
they played us very close today."
The Jaguars then took on conference newcomer Troy (1-2) in the first
conference dual match of the season. USA posted another 7-0 shutout
as it won all three doubles matches and won four of the six singles
matches in straight sets.
"Troy is the best team we have played so far this season,"
said Novak. "They guys executed their strategy this weekend."
