WALTERS DOMINANT IN 6-3 JAG WIN OVER TROY

Ala. - P.J. Walters was his usual self, pitching into the
eighth inning, allowing just two runs, as the Jags collected their
sixth win of the season by a score of 6-3 over the Troy Trojans,
at the ScreenTech Wiregrass Baseball Classic in Dothan, Ala. Friday.
Walters picked
up his second win of the season improving to 2-1. Junior Bill Klienschrodt
had two hits and three RBI’s. Also, David Freese and Guillermo
Martinez each had two hits in the Jag win. Freese extended his hitting
streak to 15 consecutive games dating back to last season.
South Alabama
got the scoring started in the top of the second. Martinez picked
up a leadoff walk and immediately stole second. Kleinschrodt then
lashed a single through the right side scoring a Martinez, giving
the Jags an early 1-0 lead.
The Jags added
to their lead in the top of the third. Tyler Jones opened the inning
with a perfect drag bunt up the first base line. After a wild pitch
put Jones on second, David Freese lined a single to right field
plating Jones. Freese’s 18th RBI on the season gave USA a
2-0 lead.
USA again took
advantage of a leadoff walk by Troy starter Mike Felix. Freese took
four straight balls to open the inning which was followed by an
Aaron George laser to left field. Martinez then singles to center
to knock in Freese from second. Ben Daw then sacrificed George and
Martinez into scoring position. Kleinschrodt ripped his second single
of the day, this one to left field to score two more Jag runners
and push the lead to 5-0.
The top of the
seventh inning saw the Jags plate their sixth run of the ball game.
Freese walked with one out. George advanced him to second via a
groundout. Martinez then singled to left field making the lead 6-0.
Troy got on
the board in the bottom of the eight inning when the picked up 2
runs on four hits. Walters gave up three hits in the inning before
being taken out for Chase Christianson. Christianson gave up one
hit before fanning Dru Rymer to end the inning.
"P.J. pitched
and excellent ball game for us," said Jaguar head coach Steve
Kittell. " He set the tempo of the game, we scrapped and clawed,
stole a few bags and got a few clutch hits. I liked the way our
guys looked tonight"
Christianson
finished the game for the Jags for the second consecutive game,
piching one and two thirds innings fanning three Trojans.
Next up for
the Jags is UAB. The Jags and Blazer will tangle at 2:30 p.m. Saturday
afternoon. UAB defeated Michigan in Friday afternoon action by a
score of 5-4.
