Contact: Dwayne Gatlin
MOBILE,
Ala.
- The South Alabama men's tennis team won both matches of their
Sunday doubleheader, defeating the Southern University Jaguars,
7-0, and the Southeastern Louisiana Lions, 6-1. The team is 7-1
record on the season and will host Clemson on Saturday, February
25 at 9 a.m.
In the first
match of the day, South Alabama shook off the cold weather to take
an early lead in doubles competition, beating Southern at all three
positions.
Mobile native,
Sam Huffman, playing at No. 5, began the singles portion of the
match with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Southern's Elvis Espinal. R.J. Nagel,
playing at the No. 4 position also notched a shutout victory, dropping
Paul DeRousselle, 6-0, 6-0.
Dias Doskarayev,
Fillip Kricka, and Mark Gellard, all won in straight sets. Robert
Hodel was awarded his match in a walkover when Southern's Christopher
Williams could not compete.
In match two
of the doubleheader, South Alabama took on Southeastern Louisiana
The match was competitive and contentious at times.
The Jaguars
won all three doubles matches to begin play. The No. 1 team of Haris
Huremovic and Ondrej Krivka pushed Jaguars, Doskarayev and Monte
Tucker before bowing out, losing the tie-breaker 7-5.
In singles,
Marek Sramek quickly dispatched of the Lions' Ondrej Krivka at the
No. 4 position, 6-3, 6-0. Shortly after, Nagel defeated Julien Lausao,
6-0, 6-1, at No. 6, and Doskarayev beat Matthiew Leboucher 6-3,
7-5 at No. 3.
Southeastern
Louisiana's No. 5, Vladimir Paunic rallied after being down a set
to Jaguar Robert Hodel, pushing the match into a decisive tie-breaker.
Hodel maintained his composure and won his match 7-6, 2-6, 1-0 (10-8)
to ensure the team's victory.
The Lions' Paunic
hurt his team by being assessed a penalty point at the end of his
match for ball abuse when he hit a ball across the court and nearly
onto the roof the hurricane-damaged recreation center adjacent to
the Bruce David Lubel Memorial Tennis Courts. The point carried
over to the marathon match between USA's Tucker and SELA's Huremovic
at the No. 1 position. Tucker was later penalized a point after
disputing a call, but managed to outlast Huremovic 7-5, 6-4.
SELA No. 2,
Illie Babinciuc grabbed a hard fought victory over Jack Baker, 5-7,
7-6, 1-0 (10-6), for the Lions' only win of the match.
"I'm really
proud of our guys having the conditioning and stamina to win two
matches in one day," head coach Scott Novak said, "We
have lots of respect for Southeastern Louisiana. They are capable
of playing with anyone in the country. We have some things to correct
as we get ready for our biggest match of the season against Clemson,
next Saturday."
