MOBILE, Ala. - Patrick Weaver collected four hits and pitchers Zach Piccola and Eric Gonzalez combined to only allow two runs in a 10-2 win over George Mason Saturday at Stanky Field.

In the top of the second inning George Mason got on the board when Brent Weiss singled to left field scoring Tyler Youngs giving the Patriots a 1-0 lead.

South Alabama battled back in the bottom half of the inning. Bill Kleinschrodt singled to left field to lead off the inning. Joel Collins moved Kleinschrodt to second via the sacrifice bunt, but drew the good fortune of an error on GMU starter J.J. Pannell. Pannell then balked both runners up a base. Tyler Jones then delivered a two run single and gave the Jags the lead 2-1.

USA broke the game open in the bottom of the fourth when it plated five runs on five hits. Jeff Morris picked up a two-out infield single and stole second base. Jones was hit by a pitch. Weaver then doubled to right center field plating two, pushing the lead to 4-1. David Freese then picked up his ninth hit of the season when he reached on an infield single. With two on and two out, Jeff Cunningham lined a home run to right field giving the Jags a 7-2 lead.

South Alabama pushed two more runs across in the eighth when Joel Collins led off the inning with his first home run of the season. Collins’ long ball was a blast to left field that managed to get through the strong wind and give the Jags a 9-2 lead. Jones scored the tenth and final Jaguar run of the day when Weaver drove him in after a double to right center field.

Eric Gonzalez picked up the win for South Alabama in relief of starter Zach Piccola. Piccola went four and two-thirds innings, allowing just two runs and seven hits. Gonzalez went four and one third of an inning to improve to 1-0.

“We capitalized on a big inning, and took the lead and this time we held it,” said head coach Steve Kittrell. “We have a big game tomorrow against Arkansas hopefully we can be two and one after this weekend.”

The Jags are back in action Sunday in the final day of the 2006 Jaguar Invitational as they take on the No. 20 Arkansas Razorbacks. First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m. Tickets can be purchased at the gate or by calling the USA Ticket Office at 460-6047.
