MOBILE,
Ala.- South Alabama standout right fielder Adam Lind was
selected in the third round by the Toronto Blue Jays during Monday's
opening day of the 2004 First-Year Major League Baseball Player
Draft.
Lind, the 83rd player chosen, led South Alabama in nearly every
offensive category this past season. The second-year sophomore,
who was draft eligible due to his 21st birthday falling within six
weeks of the draft, led the Sun Belt Conference in hitting with
a .392 average. He swatted 12 home runs and drove in 60 runs while
helping the Jaguars to a fourth consecutive regular season conference
title. He finished the season with a career-best 14-game hit streak.
An eighth round draft pick of the Minnesota Twins following his
senior of high school in 2002, Lind opted for college and had two
tremendous years at USA. He hit .372 in two seasons while starting
112 of 114 games. He earned freshman All-American honors during
his first season and was named first-team all-Sun Belt this past
season.
Lind hasn't finalized his decision on a pro ball contract, but could
still return to USA where he has two years of eligibility remaining.
Lind is the highest Jag to be selected since pitcher Eric Thomas,
a 6-foot-9, 230-pound right-hander from Orange, Mass., went in the
third round (pick number 79) of the 2002 draft by the Milwaukee
Brewers.
Justin Upton
of Great Bridges High School in Virginia was the top overall pick
by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
The draft can
be accessed on the Internet at www.mlb.com. Live audio and round-by-round
selections can be heard and seen. Draft info can also be obtained
on Baseball America's website at www.baseballamerica.com. The first
