BLUE TEAM OPENS 2005 RED AND BLUE WORLD SERIES WITH 11-3 VICTORY

MOBILE, Ala. -
The University of South baseball Blue team opened the 2005 Red and Blue World Series with an 11-3 victory at Stanky Field on Saturday to move to 1-0 in the best of seven series.

The Blue team opened the game with one run in each of the first three innings as David Freese knocked in the first run of the game on a single to left field, scoring Clark Secchiari. The second inning saw Secchiari plate the second run of the game off Red team pitcher Zach Piccola. In the third inning, the Red team relieved Piccola for Glen Desposito and Freese belted the first pitch he saw over the left field fence for a 3-0 lead.

The Red team got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning with a pair of back-to-back doubles by Ben Daw and Aaron George, to cut the deficit to 3-1.

The Blue team increased its lead to 5-1 in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs. The Red team came right back in the bottom of the inning with two and cut the deficit to 5-3.

The Blue team continued the hot bat with two more runs in the seventh to build a 7-3 lead. The Blue team added four more runs in the top of the ninth to make the score 11-3. For the game, Freese went three-for-four with two RBI and three runs and a home run to lead team. The Red team was led by Daw with a two-for-three outing and two runs.

Chase Christianson picked up the win for the Blue team, going four innings allowing two hits, one earned run, no walks and four strikeouts. Piccola took the loss for the Red team, pitching two innings, allowing two hits, two earned runs, three walks and three strikeouts.

The teams will be back in action on Sun., Oct. 2 at 2 p.m. at Stanky Field for game two of the best-of-seven series.
