TROY, Ala. - South Alabama (31-18, 15-10 SBC) won its sixth straight with the run-rule series opener victory over Troy (24-26, 13-12 SBC) after a three hour rain delay on Friday night at Riddle-Pace Field, lifted by a hot Jaguar offense and dominant outing from
Mitchell Heer.
PRIMARY THREADS
- After first pitch was pushed back three hours from its originally scheduled start time due to a rain delay, the Jags were itching for offense and struck three times in the first frame. Brennon Wright singled himself aboard to lead-off the contest and scored when Robert Miranda laced a double off of the left-center field wall at 101 MPH off the bat. Blake Guerin followed suit when a double of his own splashed just inside the left field line and allowed Duncan Mathews and Miranda to cross and complete the three-spot.
- Four more South Alabama runs crossed in the fourth and got started by way of a Robert Miranda two-run single to bring around Ethan Melton and Paxton Bigby. Blake Guerin matched Miranda for RBI's early when he plated his third of the night with a sacrifice fly. Mike Young would be responsible for the fourth run for the Jaguars when he doubled down the third base line to make it 7-0 Jags after four.
- Duncan Mathews drew his fourth consecutive walk on an eight pitch at-bat with the bags full of Jags in the fifth inning earning an RBI. The Trojans would score its lone run of the game with a solo shot in the fifth.
- Friday night arm Mitchell Heer was dominant in the win and cruised through six innings only allowing four hits and the one earned run.
- The Jags tallied four more runs in the seventh, when Brennon Wright reached on an error on the infield and advanced to third base on a second error on the play, scoring Ethan Melton. QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Mitch was our momentum. We went out there and jumped in the first and Mitch kept it in our dugout. He's done a great job of that while we've scored some for him on Friday nights and he has really responded by taking the momentum and getting us back in the dugout.
Robert Miranda got us started and our walks are up making our OBP high against some really good arms. We talked about staying off the edges and forcing it over the 10 inches.
They have plenty left over there. They are a very dangerous offense. They've got two more really good starting pitchers and another four or five really talented relievers down there, so we've got our hands full the rest of the weekend. It was good to take Friday night, but we're onto tomorrow, and our guys know that."
ON DECK
The series continues on Saturday scheduled for 3:33 p.m. (CT).
Ryland Bozenhard (2-2, 6.07 ERA) is slated to make his tenth start for the Jaguars while right-hander Tommy Egan (5-3, 4.34 ERA) is the probable for Troy.
