MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (26-18, 11-10 SBC) salvage the weekend series with a Sunday victory over No. 18 Southern Miss (31-13, 13-8 SBC) fueled by a multi-HR game from
Stewart Puckett and strong outing from starter
Daniel Gonzalez at Stanky Field.
PRIMARY THREADS
- Southern Miss got started with a run in the third inning on a triple drilled to the right-center field gap, just out of the reach of Nick Richardson who gave an outstanding effort attempting to run the ball down.
- The Jaguars responded in the fourth when Blake Guerin doubled and Mike Young reached on a fielding error on the infield for Nick Richardson, who plated Guerin on a fielder's choice to tie the game at one.
- In the Jaguar half of the sixth inning, Stewart Puckett launched his seventh home run of the season- a 409-foot solo shot over the right-center field wall that gave the Jags a 2-1 lead.
- Southern Miss took a one-run lead of its own after plating runs in the seventh and eighth innings, both on RBI base-hits.
- With Brennon Wright aboard, Stewart Puckett tagged the go-ahead two-run homer and his second long ball of the game, and would prove to be the difference maker on Sunday as the final score stood 4-3 Jaguars.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Gonzo was absolutely phenomenal. He's a rise to the occasion guy and he was as good today as he's been the last couple weeks. He's faced some good offenses but none better than this one. He's a competitor. When guys get on, he controls the running game well, under a 1.3 to the plate and his velocity stays the same. He keeps the ball off the barrel and moves the game along and our guys have a lot of confidence with him on the mound, because he has a lot of confidence.
Puckett has been lights out defensively for us, and he made a mistake today that was really uncommon for him. He got back into doing what he needed to do and hit the two homers. He bounced back and that's what tough players do. I told the guys early in the game and reminded them afterwards, no one's better than you. You need to get in there and you match up with anybody. Proud of our guys' efforts today. Happy to take this one and move on."
ON DECK
The Jaguars hit the road to New Orleans to take on UNO on Wednesday, April 29 in a midweek match-up. The Jags look to split the home-away season series with the Privateers after dropping the contest held at Stanky Field earlier this season.
