MOBILE, Ala. | Three South Alabama players –
Gracie Dees,
Edy Gavin and
Kara Wine – each recorded multi-hit performances in the nightcap as the Jaguars split their two games Friday on day one of the Jaguar Classic at Jaguar Field. In the opener, South fell 3-1 to 12th-ranked Mississippi State, but bounced back with a 5-0 win over Samford after a combined shutout effort from
Sydney Scapin and
Tori Miller.

- On the two games Friday: "I thought Ryley (Harrison) gave us a chance to win in the first game, and we didn't take advantage. Game two, I moved some things around and it worked out. We need to continue that effort into tomorrow's games."
GAME ONE – No. 12 Mississippi State 3, South Alabama 1
Key Moments
• Mississippi State (21-2) jumped out early with a pair of runs in the top of the first after a RBI double by Kiarra Sells and a sacrifice fly by Des Rivera (MSU, 2-0)
• The Jags (14-8) had a chance to answer back in the bottom half of the inning as Wine walked and moved to second on a passed ball, but Alyssa Faircloth (7-1) retired the next three to work out of the jam

Virginia Mambelli put South on the scoreboard in the bottom of the second when the junior led off the inning with her first home run of the season
• The Bulldogs led off their half of the third with two-straight singles, and M. Bernardini lined a two-out single through the left side of the infield to plate Morgan Stiles from second (MSU, 3-1)
• South brought the tying run to the plate as Mambelli led off the bottom of the seventh with a single through the right side, but Faircloth retired the final three batters pick up the win

• Dees broke a scoreless tie when the freshman dropped in her second double of the game, this one to right field, scoring Regained Franka (bunt single) and Wine (single), giving the Jags a 2-0 advantage
• Dees two-run home run to left (USA, 4-0), scoring Wine who had singled
• The Bulldogs threatened again in their half of the sixth, placing two on with two out, but Miller was able to enter in relief and get the third out to strand the runners, maintaining the four-run lead
• South Alabama (15-8) added another run its next time up as
Edy Gavin – who had doubled to lead off the bottom half of the inning – came into score on Franka's sac fly to center (USA, 5-0)
• With two on in the seventh, Miller was able to complete the shutout – South's seventh of the season – as she induced a ground out to end the game
Key Stats
• Dees was 3-for-3 to lead the way for the Jags with a pair of doubles and a home run, while driving in a career-high four
• Wine and E. Gavin also recorded multi-hit games as each was 2-for-3 and scored a run
• Franka scored a run, had a hit and drove in a run in the win
• Scapin scattered three hits and struck out four in her 5.2 innings of work, while Miller did not allow a hit in her 1.1 innings of relief to pick up her first save of the season
Postgame Notes
• The meeting marked the first between the two clubs since the 2016 season
• Friday's game versus Samford marked the second time this spring that Dees has had two doubles in a game
• The multi-hit game was the fifth of the season for Dees, while the multi-RBI game was her first
