Jags Bounce Back in Nightcap; Clark Wins 600th Game at South Alabama

MOBILE, Ala. | After dropping game one of the day to New Mexico, South Alabama bounced back with a 4-1 victory over Samford Saturday night to give South Alabama head coach Becky Clark her 600th career win with the program on day two of the Jaguar Classic at Jaguar Field.

Quotable – head coach Becky Clark
- On the two games: "I thought in the first game, I got out-coached and we got outplayed. In game two, we had good pitching, good defense, and more quality at-bats. Those little things added up to big things in the end."

GAME ONE – New Mexico 16, South Alabama 1 (5 inn.)
Key Moments

•    New Mexico (11-12) took advantage on a two-out Jaguar error in the top of the second, which led to seven unearned runs on six hits
•    Allie Williams drove in the first two runs of the inning with a two-run home run to left (UNM, 2-0), and
•    After a RBI double to left by Miracle McKenzie and a RBI single to right by Gabrielle Briones, Caitlin Benningfield provided the big blow of the inning with a three-run home run to left (UNM, 7-0)
•    The Lobos added to their lead two innings later, erupting for nine runs on seven hits to extend their lead to 16-0
•    Benningfield then drove in her fourth run of the contest with a bases-loaded infield single to get the scoring going, and pinch hitter Melanie Macias scored the second run of the frame on a sacrifice fly to left (UNM, 9-0)
•    Pinch hitter Ella Dawson extended the UNM lead to 11-0 with a two-run single to center, and after RBI single stretched the Lobo lead to 12 runs, Vasquez-Dickson added a two-run double and McKenzie lifted a two-run home run to cap off the inning (UNM, 16-0)
•    Regained Franka lined a triple to right in the bottom of the fourth for the Jaguars' first hit of contest, and later came home on a sacrifice fly to left by Virginia Mambelli (UNM, 16-1) to break up the shutout

Key Stats
•    All seven runs scored by UNM in the second were unearned, while all nine in the fourth were earned
•    Five batters recorded multiple hits for New Mexico and were led by Vasquez-Dickson, who was 4-for-4 with two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI
•    Williams and McKenzie each had two hits and drove in three, while the later also scored three runs
•    The top three batters in the New Mexico lineup went a combined 8-for-11, scored eight runs and drove in eight
•    Benningfield (5-3) was 2-for-4 with two runs scored and four RBI

Postgame Notes
•    The meeting marked the first in the series between the two clubs since the 2014 season
•    The nine-run fourth marked the third-most runs allowed in an inning to an opponent in a home game, while the seven-run second was the fifth most
•    Mambelli has driven in a run in nine of her last 13, recording 12 RBI over that stretch

GAME TWO – South Alabama 4, Samford 1
Key Moments

•    Samford (9-16) broke through with a run in the top half of the third as Katie Campbell lined a single through the right side of the infield, scoring Brandy Phillips from second, who had led off the frame with a walk (SAM, 1-0)
•    Addison Smith bounced a one-out single back up the middle in the fourth, and moved into scoring position on a sac bunt, but Ryley Harrison (8-4) stranded the Bulldog runner with her fifth strikeout of the game
•    In South Alabama's half of the fourth, Sydney Stewart drove a 2-1 pitch over the wall in left center to put the Jags on top (2-1), scoring Grace McDonald, who was pinch running for Olivia Branstetter who had walked
•    The Jaguars (16-9) added two more runs to extend their lead to three in their half of the fifth, as Gracie Dees bounced a RBI-single back up the middle, scoring Franka (HBP) from second (USA, 3-1), and later in the inning with the bases loaded, Edy Gavin's sac fly to right was deep enough to score Lively (bunt single) (USA, 4-1)
•    Samford got the lead off runner aboard with a single, but Harrison retired the final three batters, two by strikeout, to seal the win

•    Dees has had a hit in 10 of her last 13, and has recorded at least one hit in 19 of her 25 games this spring
