Jaguars Run-Rule Blazers in Montgomery

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (10-3) collects their tenth win of the season on Tuesday night at Riverwalk Stadium over in-state foe UAB (7-6) in a run-rule victory, 11-1 in eight innings.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • Hayden O'Dell took the hill in his third start of the season for the Jaguars and went five efficient innings and recorded a new career-high eight strikeouts and first win in a South Alabama uniform.
  • To no surprise, Brennon Wright started the offense off with a triple down the right field line and scored by way of a Paxton Bigby RBI single.
  • The only Blazer run of the evening came in the third inning when a double plated one, but would be the lone run allowed by the Jaguar pitching staff.
  • An error on the infield that scored two Jaguars in the fifth foreshadowed a Rett Johnson double to center that looked like a grand slam, but was overturned to a double after the umpire crew confirmed the baseball was stuck just below the yellow line in straight-away center field.
  • The contest entered the bottom of the eighth in a 6-1 score, but South Alabama put up five runs by way of hits from Ethan Melton and Stewart Puckett and RBI's from Marc Stephens Mike Young before Blake Guerin singled home two to "walk it off" in run-rule fashion.

KEY STATS
  • Brennon Wright entered the midweek game as the Sun Belt Conference hit leader, and tallied four more hits in a 4-5 effort at the dish, scoring three times and had an RBI. Wright increases his batting average to .511 and on-base percentage to .612.
  • Duncan Mathews grabbed a double and single in a 2-4 day.
  • Rett Johnson came through in a season-high three hit day with two doubles and two RBI.
  • Hayden O'Dell (W, 1-0) earned his first win while Justin Hicks (L, 0-1) recorded the loss for UAB.
  • Jaguar relievers Bray Goode, Andrew Floyd, and Jake Middleton all recorded zero's in one inning pitched a piece.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"I couldn't be prouder of the four guys that pitched tonight. They've had some rough outings, but responded like champs. (Hayden) O'Dell was really good and super competitive and had a great bounce back outing tonight. Our guys played hard all night long. They were relentless, and they competed great."
