Jags Fall to Late Mastodon Comeback

FORT WAYNE, Ind. – South Alabama women's basketball fell to Purdue Fort Wayne in the second round of the WNIT on Tuesday, 77-72.

KEY MOMENTS:
  • South Alabama got off to a nice start when Tamara Ortiz earned a quick and-one opportunity off a driving layup. Then, after the 'Dons missed a three-pointer, Amyah Sutton ran it back to drain the Jags' first three-pointer of the day.
  • After an 8-2 Jaguar run, the Mastodons would go on a 10-2 lead of their own, going 3-for-3 from the field.  The 'Dons would continue momentum to end the quarter with a three-point lead, 26-23.
  • Both teams struggled offensively to open the second quarter until Sutton tallied a three-pointer at the wing with just under seven minutes on the clock. The basket was the first field goal of the quarter and gave the Jags their first lead since 3:43 in the first quarter.
  • The Jags played in a tie or deficit for most of the second quarter. With just under three minutes on the clock, Cordasia Harris blocked a shot that resulted in a Mastodon shot-clock violation, swinging the pendulum back in the Jags' direction.
  • After the block, the Jags would regain the lead from a Harris layup. Then, with a second on the clock, Daniela Gonzalez would drain a basket from deep to give the Jags a five-point lead at the half (41-36).
  • In the third quarter, the Mastodons outscored South Alabama 19-12 before Diawna Carter-Hartley drained a last-second three-pointer to give the Jaguars a 56-55 lead.
  • Despite the Jags pulling their lead up to eight with just under four minutes left, a Mastodon comeback led by Alana Nelson would leave the Jags in a 77-72 deficit to end the game.
