MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama (9-3) secured the weekend sweep over West Georgia (1-11) at Stanky Field on Sunday afternoon.
Nathan Wood walked it off for the Jaguars by way of a sacrifice fly to center field and plated
Ty Brooks in the bottom of the ninth.
PRIMARY THREADS
- West Georgia's only run of the game came in the first batter of the game, when Patrick McCullough snuck a solo shot over the 330' sign in left field in the first.
- That would be the only run Jaguar right-hander Daniel Gonzalez would allow in the series finale, and had himself a career day - going seven strong innings and setting a new career-high nine strikeouts.
- Good defense and pitching was the story for both sides on Sunday, but Jaguar shortstop Marc Stephens tagged his first homer of the year to make it a 1-1 game in the fourth inning.
- The 1-1 score would remain true until the bottom of the ninth, when a walk to Ty Brooks, an Ethan Melton single, and a Brennon Wright intentional walk loaded the bases for Nathan Wood, who punched a sacrifice fly out to center field to win it in the ninth.
KEY STATS
- South Alabama scored two runs on six hits in the victory. Leadoff hitter Brennon Wright punched a hit up the middle to lead-off the game to push his team-best batting average to .476 and notched his 20th hit of the season.
- The weekend sweep over West Georgia is the first Jaguar sweep since May 13-15, 2022.
- Marc Stephens' solo shot marks his first of the season in a 2-4 effort at the dish.
- Daniel Gonzalez went 7.0 IP, 5 H, 1 ER, 3 BB, 9 K.
- Brian Garmon delivered 1.1 innings of two-hit ball in relief, while Zach Stevens (W, 1-1) entered in the ninth and recorded the win.
QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Gonzo (
Daniel Gonzalez) was outstanding. Gonzo to Garmon to Stevens was really good today. 10 strikeouts, four walks from those guys."
"Nate (Wood) is probably the smartest baseball guy we have on the team. He understands and knows situational baseball, and knows what he's got to do. Super happy with Nate staying ready and he's just a great teammate."

The Jags will drive up the road to Riverwalk Stadium in Montgomery, Ala., to take on in-state foe UAB in a midweek contest and neutral site setting as the home team. The game is set for Tuesday, March 3, at 6:00 p.m.
