Heer, Shineflew Sit Down 21 Consecutive Wolves in Series Opener Victory

MOBILE, Ala. - South Alabama's (7-3) combination of two-out hitting and dominant final six frames on the mound grab a series opener victory over West Georgia (1-9) at Stanky Field on Friday night.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • Friday night arm Mitchell Heer saw adversity out of the gate after a single, walk, and error on the infield loaded the bases for the Wolves five-hole hitter Anthony Cole who blasted a grand slam to left center field.
  • Brennon Wright scored on a double down the left field line and a fielding error on the play brought him all the way around the bases to grab a run for the Jags in the home half of the first inning.
  • The Jaguar offense continued their two out hitting surge in the second inning when shortstop Marc Stephens singled home Wright and Rett Johnson who were moving on the full count, two out pitch. Third baseman Stewart Puckett knocked in Stephens on the next pitch to total three runs all with two outs to make it a 4-4 game.
  • Heer was unfazed by the first inning crooked number and would sit down nine consecutive in the away halves of the third through fifth innings.
  • Mike Young's fifth inning RBI single would plate Puckett for his tenth RBI of the season.
  • The bottom of the seventh saw a solo shot off the bat of Blake Guerin to cash in his third long ball of the season.
  • Jaxon Shineflew took over in the sixth inning and sat down every hitter he saw for his second consecutive four inning save. Heer and Shineflew combined to retire 21 consecutive West Georgia hitters to shut down the game on the mound.

KEY STATS
  • Shineflew has recorded a hitless streak through his last 8.1 innings pitched.
  • Heer (W, 2-0) recorded his second consecutive win while Maverick Torres (L, 0-1) carded the loss.
  • Brennon Wright scored three times in a 1-2 effort with two walks and a HBP.
  • Stewart Puckett grabs his team-best eleventh RBI of the season.
  • Blake Guerin's solo shot marks his third of the year.
  • The Jags as a team are hitting .308 with two outs and have 35 RBI.

QUOTABLE
HEAD COACH MARK CALVI
"Mitchell Heer settled back in after the first and was fantastic. Him and Shineflew got 21 in a row, and I'm not shocked by that from them."

"We did what we had to do, but we need to be better in the batters box tomorrow, no doubt about it. We weren't impacting the baseball like we needed to tonight, and we won't win some games playing like that moving forward."

ON DECK
The Jags are set for a 2:00 p.m. first pitch tomorrow, Feb. 28. Junior southpaw Max Miller (1-1, 7.11 ERA) will make his third start for the Jags while Wilson Donnelly (0-1, 7.04 ERA) is the probable for West Georgia.
