Jaguar Bullpen Holds On in Tuesday Night Win Over Colonels

THIBODAUX, La. - South Alabama (3-1) got it done Tuesday night in Thibodaux with a win over Nicholls State (0-4), by a score of 7-5.

PRIMARY THREADS
  • The Jaguar offense struck first out of the gate when Stewart Puckett singled home Duncan Mathews, who reached on a walk in the top of the first inning.
  • Mathews stayed hot, roping a double to the left field corner scoring Brennon Wright from first in the top of the third.
  • Senior left-hander Hayden O'Dell took the rubber for the first time in a Jaguar uniform and delivered 3.1 innings of work only allowing one run and three hits alongside five punchouts.
  • The Jaguar offense got hot in the sixth, with Mike Young connecting for his third homer of the season. A defensive miscue off the bat of Mathews plated Ethan Melton, and Stewart Puckett roped a two-RBI single for a total of three RBI on Tuesday night.
  • Bryant Quimby took over for his first outing as a Jaguar in the fourth inning with one-away and executed 3.1 innings of shutout ball, until he exited responsible for two runners aboard. The Colonel bats came around and put up four runs in the bottom of the eighth.
  • Andrew Floyd entered in the same inning with two outs, and closed the door on the damage in the inning, striking out the first hitter he saw. After two runners reached in the bottom of the ninth and advanced on a wild pitch with one out, Floyd stepped up and shut the door with a strikeout and popout to secure the victory and the four-out save.
  • The win improves the Jaguars' all-time record vs. the Colonels to 38-18 in 56 total games.

KEY STATS
  • Leadoff hitter Brennon Wright collected his seventh hit of the season in a 2-5 effort, scoring both times he reached base.
  • Duncan Mathews also scored twice alongside an RBI double, posting a 1-3 day with two walks.
  • Stewart Puckett led the offense in the RBI category (3) on Tuesday night, contributing timely hitting in a 2-5 line.
  • Bryant Quimby earned his first win as a Jaguar, delivering 4.0 innings of two-run ball and striking out four.
  • Andrew Floyd credits a four-out save, his first of the season.

"Quimby came in at a turning point in the game, with first and third and got two fly balls to get us out of it. He just really came up huge for us. And Floyd was phenomenal. He came in in a jam and closed it out and was just proud of those guys' efforts tonight. We needed everyone to get it done tonight."

The Jaguars open a three-game set at the College of Charleston on Friday, Feb. 20 slated for a 3:00 p.m. first pitch. Saturday's contest will see a 1:00 p.m. start, while the season finale is scheduled for 12:00 p.m. (All times listed in Central Time).
