Jaguars Fall to Eagles at the Mitch

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama women's basketball fell to Georgia Southern at the Mitchell Center on Saturday, 69-46. The Jaguars are now 2-7 in Sun Belt play and 9-10 for the season.

KEY MOMENTS:
  • The Eagles started strong, going on a 6-0 run to take an early 10-3 lead with six minutes left in the first quarter. However, the Jaguars responded with an 11-3 run, also going 4-for-4 from the field.
  • South Alabama's backcourt turned up the heat in the second quarter, holding the Eagles scoreless for five minutes. The Eagles would then total eight points, bringing their lead at the half to 30-26.
  • In the third quarter, Georgia Southern's Destiny Garrett, who ranks fourth in the Sun Belt in points per game, scored 12 points. Garrett went 5-for-6 from the field.
  • The Eagles' backcourt dominated in the fourth quarter, forcing six Jaguar turnovers.

KEY STATS:
  • Despite the deficit, the Jaguars held the Eagles below their season averages in field-goal percentage, three-point percentage, free-throw percentage and blocks per game. 
  • Tamara Ortiz scored 19 points, two shy of her career-high. The 19-piece marked the fourth game in a row in which she set a season-high in scoring.
  • Ortiz also recorded five assists, tying her career-high.
  • Daniela Gonzalez grabbed her 500th career rebound, totaling six against the Eagles.

The Jaguars will face App State on the road at 6:30 p.m. EST on Thursday (1/29) at Holmes Convocation Center in Boone, N.C.
