MOBILE, Ala. | South Alabama rallied back with four runs over is last two innings and
Ryley Harrison tossed three-innings of two-hit, shutout ball Sunday as the Jags took the series finale, 5-2 over ULM at Jaguar Field to clinch the Sun Belt series win.
Harrison (9-2) picked up the win in relief as she struck out three and didn't walk a batter, while allowing just the two hits to the Warhawks, which led the conference offensively in several categories entering the weekend series. Four of South's five RBI came with two outs as the Jags batted .429 in those situations. Over the last two games, South is 8-for-17 (.471) in two-out situations with eight runs driven in.
The Jaguars improved to 19-29 overall and 8-12 in the SBC, while ULM fell to 34-18 and 14-7 with the loss.
Olivia Branstetter was 2-for-2 at the plate with a pair of RBI, while
Gabby Stagner also drove in a run and
Presley Lively scored twice. For the second time in the series,
Sophia Mendoza drove in two runs off the bench.
Quotable – head coach Becky Clark
- On the play of the team: "Today was great, it was really just a team effort. We need these games in a bad way, and the grit and the fight, and the teamwork that we showed today is just something I'm really proud of."
- On two-out hitting the last two days: "To me (two-out hitting) is just grit and digging in. We're fighting right now and playing together. We've had people come off the bench and contribute for us, which is huge. When I see that kind of stuff, I see a team that's working together. It's hard for me to say how proud I am of them for doing that, because that was all them, just their grit and their want-to."
- On the upcoming Troy series to close things out: "The series with Troy is always a fun series, and a hard-fought series. We have to take what we've just built for ourselves going into this week and continue it. We've got to control the things we can control, which is working together as a team and our compete level. I feel we're in a good spot right now."
Sophomore RHP Ryley Harrison
- On what she's done over the last two weeks while not being able to be out in the circle: "Me and Coach Hannah (Campbell) have been working on the little things and fundamentals; the stuff I was able to tolerate and do. Yesterday, I ran off of adrenaline. My team did great behind me and the offense did great both days. I didn't put a lot of pressure on myself. I just came out here and played the game I love, and made it be fun."
- On getting the cushion in the sixth: "Scoring those two runs in the sixth inning was really big for me. The hit that Soph (
Sophia Mendoza) and the line drive that Megan (Davidson) had that hit off the glove really kept us going. It was a big relief for me to know that I didn't have to be perfect."
Sophomore 3B Olivia Branstetter
- On the two-run hit to give South the lead for good: "That at-bat, I was just looking for something to hit. I knew she would give me a pitch and I was just looking to get my barrel on it."
- On how big it is to win the series: "It's huge for us. As a team, we've been battling and we've come up short on the offensive side. To be able to come in and get these two games this week is huge for us. It's a huge credit to our offense and how hard we've worked."
- On the mentality of the team heading into next weekend's series with Troy: "We're going to keep the same mentality: pitch good, play good defensively and on offense, we just have to keep doing what we're doing right now."
How It Happened
• Lively led off the bottom of the first and then was sacrificed over by Branstetter. Stagner then scored the freshman from second base with a RBI single through the left side of the infield (USA, 1-0).
• Hollie Thomas nearly tied the game up a half inning later as she led off the frame with a fly ball to left, but
Brooklynn Bockhaus made a leaping grab at the wall to rob her of a home run.
• Carys Platt reached on an infield hit with two outs in the top of the third and Brooklin Lippert lined a single to left center to put runners at the corners. After Lippert stole second, Meagan Brown dropped in a single in shallow left, scoring a pair for the Warhawks (ULM, 2-1).
• Mea. Brown lined a two-out double to right in the top of the fifth and the left fielder moved up a base on a wild pitch, but
Ryley Harrison, who had entered the game to start the frame struck out Morgan Brown to strand the runner at third.

Ansleigh Smith lined a one-out single to center and Bockhaus moved the runner into scoring position with her 10th sacrifice bunt of the spring. Smith then advanced to third on a wild pitch and Lively walked to put runners at the corners with two outs. Branstetter then put the Jags back on top (3-2) doubling to right center to score the pair.
• With the bases loaded, Mendoza lined a two out single to left in the bottom of the six to add some insurance for the Jags, scoring
