Louisiana Clinches Series with 8-0 Win; Series Finale Set for Saturday

LAFAYETTE, La. | Louisiana scored five runs over the first two innings and took advantage of some South Alabama defensive miscues, and then scored three in the sixth as the Ragin' Cajuns captured an 8-0, run-rule victory in game two of the series Friday night at Yvette Girouard Field at Lamson Park.

South Alabama falls to 17-26 overall and 6-10 in the Sun Belt with the loss, while Louisiana evens its record at 22-22 and improves to 8-9 in the league.

Gabby Stagner and Olivia Branstetter both had a hit and reached twice with a walk and a hit-by-pitch, respectively.

How It Happened
•    Louisiana jumped out to the early lead with three runs in its half of the first. Maddie Hayden reached on a lead off, infield single and Dayzja Williams then put runners at second and third with a bunt single and both runners moved up on the play with some aggressive base running. Emily Smith dropped in a single in right center to score Hayden and give UL the early lead (UL, 1-0). Sam Roe reached on a fielder's choice as she laid down a squeeze bunt to score Williams (UL, 2-0). A sacrifice bunt put runners at second and third with one out, and the Ragin' Cajuns added their third run of the inning on Mia Norwood's RBI ground out (UL, 3-0).
•    Sidney Lee lined a one-out single to left center in the top of the second, and after advancing to second on an error on a failed pick off attempt, Frankie Andujo singled to put runners at the corners. UL starter Sam Ryan held the Jags off the scoreboard with a ground out to second and then a strikeout to end the inning.
•    Erin Ardoin reached on a fielding error when her ball to short was bobbled and the junior then moved to second on the play when the throw to first was off target. She was sacrificed to third on a bunt by Mia Liscano, and UL took advantage of the defensive miscues as Ardoin came in on Hayden's RBI single (UL, 4-0). Hayden then stole second and the throw to second went off Hayden's foot on the slide and into the outfield, allowing her to come around and score (UL, 5-0) on the two-base error.
•    Stagner reached for the second time in as many plate appearances with a two-out walk, and South then put runners at second and third when Olivia Branstetter singled and advanced to second on the throw to third. Ryan though again held the Jags off the scoreboard with a ground out to short to end the inning.
•    Gabbe Stutes singled to begin the sixth for Louisiana and Ardoin followed with a bunt single of her own. With one out, South committed its third error of the game as Andujo's toss to second for the force was high, allowing two runs to score (UL, 7-0). Williams then plated Hayden with a sacrifice fly to end the game (UL, 8-0).
