South Alabama Opens Up Postseason Play Monday at SBC Championship

MOBILE, Ala. | The South Alabama women's golf team will open up postseason action this week at the Sun Belt Conference Championship held at the Lakewood Club on the Dogwood Course in Point Clear, Ala., in search of its first league title since 2019.

The 13-team field will begin the three-day championship event will get underway on Monday morning with the first tee time set for 8 a.m. The field will return Tuesday and Wednesday for two more 18-hole rounds on the 6,106-yard, par-72 course beginning each day at 8 a.m.

Following the conclusion of the first three rounds, the top four teams will advance to match play on Thursday. The semifinals will be contested in the morning on the last day of the tournament, with the winners meeting in the afternoon to claim the league's automatic berth to an NCAA Regional.

South Alabama enters the postseason ranked No. 81 nationally, and the third-highest among Sun Belt schools – Georgia Southern (No. 35) and ULM (No. 79). The Jaguars hold a 74-25-1 overall record on the season.

Along with the Jags, the field includes Appalachian State, Arkansas State, Coastal Carolina, Georgia State, Georgia Southern, James Madison, Marshall, Old Dominion, Southern Miss, Texas State, Troy and ULM.

Scheduled to compete for the Jaguars are Katharina Schroll (No. 1), Mercedes Aldana (No. 2), Cassidy Lambert (No. 3), Malia Uyeshiro (No. 4) and Flavia Tamburlini (No. 5). Anna Behnsen will serve as the sixth player in the Jaguar contingent. 

Schroll – who has twice been named the SBC Golfer of the week this season – leads the Jaguars in scoring, averaging 72.4 strokes per round entering the tournament. The freshman has finished inside the Top 5 in each of her last three events and inside the Top 10 in seven of her last eight.

Schroll has also fired a team-best 11 rounds at par or under, as well as four rounds under 70. She has also tallied a total of 61 birdies, which is the most by a Jag. 

Aldana (73.3), Lambert (74.7), Uyeshiro (74.8), Behnsen (75.5), and Tamburlini (76.7) have also been solid this season. Aldana has recorded five rounds under par with a low of 69 and five rounds at par, while Behnsen has four rounds under 70. 

Aldana (53) and Behnsen (50) rank second and third, respectively, in birdies. As a team, the Jaguars have eight eagles this season: Lambert (3), Tamburlini (2), and Aldana, Behnsen and Uyeshiro each with one apiece.

Lambert comes into the postseason playing some of her strongest golf as she has posted back-to-back 11th-place finishes. Tamburlini will be playing in her fourth consecutive event and has placed 12th or better in two of her last three outings. 

As a team, South Alabama finished inside the Top 5 in eight of its nine team events this season and is averaging 293.1 strokes per round.
