Jaguars Take the Series Over Marshall with Branstetter’s Walk-Off

MOBILE, Ala. | Olivia Branstetter delivered a two-out, RBI single to right in the bottom of the seventh Sunday afternoon to give South Alabama (17-24, 6-8 SBC) a walk-off, 10-9 victory and clinch the Sun Belt Conference series over Marshall (23-19, 9-6) at Jaguar Field.

Branstetter was 3-for-4 at the plate and in addition to the game-winning RBI, also scored twice while walking once. Stephanie Gonzalez and Frankie Andujo were also 3-for-4 at the plate with four RBI in the win. Gonzalez homered, while Andujo scored a run.

Marshall's Diamond Leslie was 4-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI in the loss. Bub Feringa also had a pair of hits, including a home run, and drove in three for the Herd.

Quotable – head coach Becky Clark
- On getting the win to clinch the series: "It was a great team win today. Marshall's a great team and they constantly battle. I'm proud of our kids for gritting, fighting and digging in and getting it done on our home field. Last night, we talked about finding a way to get the hit, finding a way to make the pitch, finding a way to make the play, and we did that today."

- On the bats coming around this series: "We've finally found a gear where we're just in attack mode. I don't know what clicked for us, but the intensity, the sense of urgency that we're playing with right now is nice to see. We're playing at a different level from a 'grit' standpoint and a compete standpoint. We have to stay locked into that mindset."

Senior 1B Stephanie Gonzalez
- On how big the win was: "Today was a big win for us from a behind-the-scenes standpoint. We need to win as many games as we can right now, and this was a really big series for us to take."

- On her first-inning home run: "I was locked into my approach. I was sitting on an inside pitch, because that was all she had been able to throw for strikes. I was in a 2-2 count, and that was the pitch I wanted."

Sophomore 3B Olivia Branstetter
- On the importance of the win: "This was a huge win. We've needed something to pick us up from our other losses that we've had in conference play. It was a great team win. We were able to pick up Gabby Stagner who was hurt in the first game of the series. The win just shows how much of a team we are and how when we work together, we can do good things."

- On her day at the plate and getting the game winner: "I was just looking to have a good approach at the plate, and that was it."

How It Happened
•    Marshall's Rielly Lucas led off the game with a double to right center, and one batter later Leslie homered to straight-away center, her sixth of the spring (MARSH, 2-0). The Herd later extended its lead to 5-0 on Feringa's three-run home run to center.
•     South Alabama answered right back with five runs on four hits and batted around in its half of the opening frame. Presley Lively drew a lead-off walk to begin the inning for the Jags and moved into scoring position after a wild pitch by Jules King.
•    Paige Simpson reached on an error, stole second and then moved to third on a ground out to first Marshall's next time up. Leslie then lined a flare to shallow right center to score Simpson (MARSH, 6-5).
•    South Alabama retook the lead in its half of the fourth with four runs. Lively reached for the second time with a one-out, infield single in South's half of the fourth, and Branstetter followed with another single back up the middle. One batter later, Gonzalez plated her fourth run of the afternoon with a RBI single back up the middle, scoring Lively from second (Tied, 6-6). With two away, Megan Davidson worked the count full before drawing a walk off Marshall reliever Paige Maynard to load the bases. Ward followed with a walk of her own to bring in Branstetter (USA, 7-6). Andujo extended the lead one batter later with a two-run single back up the middle (USA, 9-6), scoring pinch runner Brea Holley and Davidson.
•    Leslie led off the top of the fifth with her second home run of the day and her third of the series to pull Marshall within two (USA, 9-7).
•    Feringna lined a one-out single in the top of the sixth and Kasia Parks was then hit by a pitch to put a pair on for the Herd. Simpson then drew a walk to load the bases, and Feringna then scored when Lucas' fly out to deep right was dropped (USA, 9-8). Leslie then tied the game back up (9-9) with a RBI single back up the middle, her fifth RBI of the contest.
•    Andujo bounced a single back up the middle to start off the bottom of the seventh for South, and Caitlyn Gavin laid down a bunt and beat the throw to first to put a pair on. Both runners were then moved up on a sacrifice bunt by Bockhaus. With two outs, Branstetter delivered as she drove the ball the other way to drive in Andujo for the game-winning run (USA, 10-9).
