MOBILE, Ala. - The Jaguars rebounded with a resounding win, hinged on quality pitching and a six-RBI day from
Kyle Morrison.
The Jags acted early, starting the game with three hits in a row.
Brennan Holt and
John Smith III reached on singles and Morrison cleared the bases with a home run out of left field.
Morrison's third at-bat was Deja-vu for him, with runners at first and second base. He slapped a double through the right side to score both, then scored himself off an infield error.
Mitchell Heer commanded the mound for 6.0 innings, only allowing one hit through the first five innings, and only allowed his second in a solo, wind-assisted home run. Heer finished with two hits, one run, no walks allowed, and two strikeouts.
Runners on the corners in the seventh led to one more for the Jags. Smith doubled in the eighth, with Morrison doubling right behind him to send him home to establish the 8-1 lead. The last time a Jaguar hit six or more RBIs in a game was in April of 2023, when
Joseph Sullivan scored 8 Jags against Southern.
Jaxon Shineflew closed out the game behind Heer, tossing 3.0 innings, allowing three hits, and striking out four, with three in the eighth inning.Â
Win: Mitchell Heer (2-0)
Save: Jaxon Shineflew (1)
Loss: Matthew Holzhammer (0-3)
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
On the team's performance today: The game stops and starts on the mound, and I've said it 1000 times. We got seven of the nine leadoff hitters out for them. We got a bunch of our leadoff hitters on. That is the key to having success on defense or offense. On offense, you're trying to work to get your lead off guy on. When you do, you have a higher chance of scoring run. On defense, you're working hard to get the opposing team's offense out. You're trying to get that lead off out. It's very hard to score with one out from the first hitter. It's hard to string together a couple hits and score. If you're not walking guys and you're getting the lead off outs consistently, you're not giving up a lot of runs. So Mitch Heer was absolutely fantastic today. Threw his cutter in there, you know, not a lot of strikeouts, but he's around the plate, forcing bad contact. That's what he did all day long. Six innings on 75 pitches, no walks. He got five of his six lead off outs, and then Shineflew got two of his three. So, super proud of Mitch and Shineflew today. We jumped early, (Brennan) Holt, you know, leading off the game, and John (Smith) and then K-Mo (
Kyle Morrison) with the three-run home run. We knocked their starter out in the first, (Blake) McGehee settled in a little bit, but I liked what we did, you know, it was a different look. He took some momentum from us there in the first inning, and it took us, it took us a couple innings, 'til the fourth to kind of get on to McGehee. He was good. He was mixing, you know, any pitch, any count, change up, right on right, right on left. 2-0, change ups. He was really good. He mixed his breaking ball in there. We figured him out in the fourth and touched home plate a couple times, and then against their lefty, who I really like, Marcotte. He's a freshman. He's going to be really, really good, up to 90 with a good two seam, a good four seam, a good breaking ball, a good changeup. I thought our guys hit some good pitching today, and beat a very good team, so happy with the win, but we got to, we got to know how to go out and get a series and that starts tomorrow.
