ATLANTA, Ga. - South Alabama (10-8, 0-2), despite quality pitching, was stymied to a 0-3 shutout by Georgia State (14-6, 2-0)
Zach Willingham led the Jags through 4.1 innings, with five strikeouts before being relieved by
Jaxon Shineflew for the remainder of the game. Willingham worked in and out of a third inning jam, then gave up a solo home run in the fourth before finishing his day.Â
Shineflew's lone run was off a string of walks that let one run in just before he was able to tally the third out of the sixth.
Other than the first inning, the Jags were unable to stack successful at bats, with the first being the only inning with multiple runners on base at a time.
Win: Ross Norman (3-2)
Save: Jacob Crews (2)
Loss: Zach Willingham (2-2)
QUOTES
Head Coach Mark Calvi
Overall thoughts: I thought we obviously pitched well enough to win today. Didn't get enough hits. We lined out eight times. Now, we had some good at bats, it's just we lined out, hit into a couple double plays, lined out a couple times with men on, and their guy pitched really well. I thought we had some chances. I thought we chased some pitches there. I thought we had some soft at bats in the middle of the game. But other than that, our guys played hard and just didn't have a whole lot to show for it. Like I said, Willingham kept us in position. Shineflew kept us in position. You give up three runs on the road. Their guy was good today, and you know, the line outs bailed him out, and a couple double plays got him off the hook. So that's baseball.
