Elijah Ormiston dropped a season-high 27 points and grabbed five rebounds to help propel the Jags over Marshall in a 91-82 overtime thriller Thursday night at home. While only shooting 18.7 percent (2-13) from three-point range, South Alabama scored 52 points in the paint, shot 51.3 percent (31-60) from the field, and 81.8 percent from the charity stripe (27-33), and forced Marshall to shoot 29.2 percent (14-48) from behind the arc.
Notes
- The Jags have committed to their zone defense this season and have eliminated any chance of driving in the lane for open shots. They have forced 60 percent of their opponents' shots to come from three-point range this year. The all-time NCAA record is 52 percent (per Kenpom).
- Ormiston has been unloading on teams in the last four games, averaging 16.5 points on 71 percent (27-38) shooting from the field and 3.2 rebounds in that stretch. Ormiston took it to Marshall, finishing with a D1 career-high 26 points on 11-15 from shooting the floor with five rebounds.
- Barry Dunning Jr. has been the go-to guy since the beginning of conference play. The leading scorer for USA in Sun Belt play has put up 19 double figures scoring games this season, including 11 in conference play. He currently ranks eighth in the SBC in rebounding (6.8) and field goal percentage (43.9) and has registered a double-double in two of the last four games. He's scored 73 points (18.2 per game) grabbed 40 rebounds in that stretch and matched his career-high with 22 points while also grabbing 12 rebounds against Akron.
- A transfer from NAIA William Jessup (Ontario, Calif.), Corey scored 1626 points during his time with the Warriors. With a 17-point outing against Marshall, Myles has tallied 384 points this season pushing him over the 2000-point mark.
- Richie Riley's teams have been dominant in February since he took the reins of the program in the 2018-19 season. Riley owns a 36-16 record in the month, and last season, the Jags won six of their final eight games to end the year.
- USA leads the Sun Belt in assists per game, contributing 15.04 per contest. Four players average two or more assists per game -- Myles Corey (4.2), Randy Brady (2.4), JJ Wheat (2.4), and Barry Dunning Jr. (2.2).

- Texas State leads the all-time series 11-6 and has won three of the last five matchups. The Jags are 5-4 at home against the Bobcats and won the most recent meeting 72-55 on Feb. 15, 2024.

- Texas State snapped a five-game losing streak on Thursday with a 72-60 win at ULM. It is the second straight time that the Bobcats have ended a five-game skid with a victory on the road over the Warhawks.

- Terrence Johnson picked up his 85th career win on Thursday to move into a tie for seventh place in team history with Dan Wall (1977-82). Johnson is one victory short of advancing into sixth place along with Mike Miller (1994-00).
