Applewhite Announces Additions of May and Douglas to Football Staff

MOBILE, Ala. – South Alabama head football coach Major Applewhite has announced the additions of JT May and Cedric Douglas to positions on his staff.

May will serve as the program's chief of staff and Douglas will be the defensive line coach. Both May and Douglas were on staff together at Utah State in 2024.

May spent four seasons at Utah State in various roles within the program. He arrived in 2020 and worked with the team's quarterbacks in a quality control role before serving as an offensive recruiting analyst in 2021. After a break in 2022 when he was the special teams coordinator and running backs coach at Mica Mountain High School in Arizona, he returned to Utah State as the director of internal operations for two seasons.

In 2023, May helped Utah State to six wins and its third-straight bowl game as it played in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl. Overall, it was USU's 11th bowl game in the last 13 seasons. In 2021, May helped the Aggies to their best season in school history as they tied the school record with 11 wins, won their first-ever Mountain West Conference Championship with a 46-13 victory at No. 19 San Diego State, posted a 24-13 win against Oregon State in the Jimmy Kimmel LA Bowl and finished the season ranked 24th in the nation.

May's time with the Aggies started after he spent four years coaching at Pacific University in Forest Grove, Ore. During his tenure at Pacific, May coached defensive line, receivers, tight ends and coordinated special teams. He coached seven players to all-Northwest Conference recognition, and helped coach an offense that ranked seventh nationally in third down conversion percentage and a defense that finished 20th nationally in sacks.

May started his football coaching career in Arizona at his alma mater, Buena Vista High School. Before that, he played two seasons at Pacific University before transferring to Arizona, where he earned his bachelor's degree in molecular and cellular biology with a minor in pre-law. He later earned a master's degree in secondary education from Arizona.

Douglas also arrives in Mobile by way of Utah State, having spent the 2024 season as the defensive line coach and defensive run game coordinator for the Aggies. He helped Utah State finish fourth in the Mountain West in sacks, tackles for loss and interceptions last season. He also coached two all-conference selections in edge rusher Cian Slone and defensive tackle Gabriel Iniguez Jr.

Prior to his time in Utah, Douglas coached the defensive line at Buffalo for three seasons.  During the 2023 season, Douglas helped coach a Bulls defense that allowed just 187.2 passing yards per game to rank 21st in the nation. During the 2022 season, Buffalo won just its third bowl game in program history with a victory against Georgia Southern in the Camellia Bowl. Defensively, the Bulls scored three touchdowns during the season to rank 12th in the nation. Buffalo also allowed opponents to convert just 35.6 percent of its third downs, which ranked 41st in the nation. Following the 2022 season with the Bulls, Douglas was selected to participate in the 35 Under 35 Coaches Leadership Institute.

Prior to his time in New York, Douglas coached defensive line at Massachusetts for two seasons. Before that, he spent two years in the Sun Belt at Arkansas State where he was a graduate assistant working with the defensive line. He helped the Red Wolves make back-to-back bowl games in 2017 and 2018, and also coached Ja'Von Rolland-Jones and Ronheen Bingham to Sun Belt Player of the Year and Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, respectively.

In 2013, Douglas started his coaching career at Ave Maria as the running backs coach, then coached receivers and served as recruiting coordinator in 2014. In 2015, he coached tight ends at Coffeyville Community College before becoming the defensive line coach at Hutchinson Community College in 2016.

Douglas played outside linebacker at Northern Michigan from 2007-11, and graduated from the university with a degree in secondary education in 2011.
