Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Strong Fourth Quarter Not Enough as Jags Fall to Coastal Carolina at Home

MOBILE, Ala.- Despite a strong fourth quarter, the Jags would come up short to Coastal Carolina in a 73-58 final.

The opening quarter proved to be a back-and-forth affair between both sides with South getting a quick 4-0 lead to start thanks to buckets from Rachel Leggett and Amyria Walker. Both sides continued to trade baskets before the visitors would get hot and go on a 10-2 run to close the quarter.

Terren Coffil rained in a three to begin the second quarter for the Jags to gain momentum. Despite their best efforts, South Alabama struggled from the field for the remainder of the quarter as the Chanticleers jumped ahead and extended their lead to as much as 21. South made one last push at the end of the quarter to put a dent in the lead as the Jags entered into the half down 39-19.

The Jags started to gain momentum at the start of the third as Daniela Gonzalez and Amyria Walker converted on back-to-back buckets. As the quarter neared its end, the Jags shooting struggles continued while the Chanticleers took a 24-point lead heading into the fourth.

The Jags came out hot in the fourth as Daniela Gonzalez nailed two threes to cut the deficit to 16. Gonzalez stayed warm, connecting on another three. The remainder of the quarter saw the Jags give an exceptional effort on both sides of the floor, converting on offense and playing a strong brand of defense. The Jags continued to play hard but would come up just short in a 73-58 final.

STATS

Daniela Gonzalez led the Jags with 19 points and four rebounds. Amyria Walker followed up with 15 points and a career-high seven rebounds as Rachel Leggett had a near double-double with nine points and 10 rebounds.

QUOTES

Daniela Gonzalez on where they are as a team, "I think that we are a good team. We just need to learn from the game. We're gonna watch film and learn from it. I think we need to get better on defense".

On her performance, "I think that is because of my teammates. They found me in the open spot and I can have a lot of shots but the most important thing is that we can get the win . We will be ready for the next game".

Yolisha Jackson on the fourth quarter and the result, "With a new and young group it is hard when you go through these hard times in a season. We're trying to talk about the positives. We had a terrible second quarter but we outscored them in the second half 39-34. We are going to look at our turnover percentage. In the first half we couldn't get in a flow, we were having travels where we were sped up due to the pressure so that affected us in terms of getting into a flow and shooting the ball. Rachel had 10 rebounds tonight. She hasn't done that in a while so that is good to see. Princess came in and rebounded. She hasn't rebounded like that in a while, grabbing four offensive boards. We put a lot of emphasis on Coastal's top kids but then we had the others come in and have wonderful nights. What we told our kids is that we are right here but right here is this far away. We have got to keep plugging and going".
