OXFORD, Miss. – South Alabama Men's Tennis used several big singles performances to pick up a 4-3 victory over Tulane Sunday on the campus of Ole Miss.
The victory improved the Jaguars to 2-1 overall for the season.
"What a crazy match," said South Alabama head coach Nick Brochu. "Tulane is super high energy and super aggressive, but we knew that coming in. We competed much better than yesterday, and that was our number one goal. We got up 3-1 on the scoreboard really quick, but the momentum shifted completely when Tulane started coming back. It came down to Victor at number two. Victor played an amazing match and did a good job of putting the pressure back on Tulane. This was a typical college match that was back-and-forth. Seeing the guys rush the court after a big win was great. That's what college tennis is about, is winning as a team."
Juan Accossatto and
Harold van Raemdonck combined to pick up a 6-2 victory in doubles play to start the day, but that was the only match South could win in doubles as the Green Wave claimed the doubles point to take a 1-0 lead.
With ground to make up, South quickly got to work in singles play. van Raemdonck got the Jags on the board first by making quick work of his opponent in the form of a 6-4, 6-0 victory.
Javier Montoya came through next by beating Tulane's Luka Petrovic who was ranked No. 101 in the nation by a score of 6-2, 6-1. It was the second day in a row that Montoya defeated a ranked opponent in the No. 1 position as Montoya moved to 3-0 in singles play on the season.
Now leading 2-1, Accossatto put another point on the board for the Jags by beating his Green Wave foe 6-4, 6-3. That win put the Jags up 3-1, but Tulane hung tough and evened the match at 3 points apiece. The match came down to Victor Frumholz who faced a 5-3 deficit in the third set of his match. Frumholz fought off a match point to go on and even the set at five games apiece before winning the next two to clinch a 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 win. The win secured the fourth team point for South Alabama which lifted the Jaguars to the team victory.
South's road swing will continue with a pair of in-state matches in Birmingham. The Jags will face Samford on Sunday, Feb. 2 before challenging UAB the following day.
